What a contrast we see to-day Every body knows that there is a shortage, and still the Government appear determined to ignore the alarming fact nothing were wrong.

Besides the money short aud unaccount- ed for, we charge that dishonest, corrupt and seaadalous allowances and reductions have been made in the Land Office since the present Government came into power. Day by day the Attorney-General walks in- to the Land Office and dictates to the Com- missioner regarding the settlement of ac- counts. Why should Mr. McMillan abdi- cate the duties he is sworn to perform and allow a man who has given no bonds nor taken an official oath regarding the Land Office to transact the business! We have in Our possessio? a copy of the statement submitted to the House of Assembly show- ing allowances and deductions made to pur- chasers of land, and we intend to extract from this statement, from time to time, in- stances of the scandalous malfeasance in office which glares from almost every line of it. . Here are a few of the transactions, which my be taken as samples of the rest :

Here we have nearly seven hundred dol- tare qwen away to thirteen persous in the collection of nine hundred dollars, the aver- age rate of reduction over 45 per cent. of amount owed ' We will be told, perhaps, that some of the vetting these allowances are that others are not very pronounced grits. This does not make the matter look any better. In fact, it shows more clearly the scandalous nature of the power Mr. Peters has usurped in -he Land Office. -He is day by day using the Land Office accounts as a means of influencing the votes of the people and rewarding his political friends, On what other ground can it be explained why Mr. Isaac Sellers, of Lot 33, should be forgiven the sum of $34.98 in paying the sum of $49.22, while his neighbor, Mr. William Gill,receives only 66 cents discount on @ payment of $22.05? Other farmers on Lot 33 receive very different treatment from Mr. Isaac Sellers. For instance, Mr. Christ- mas Bryenton gets only$19.36 reduction on payments amounting to -$135, and Mr. Theodoric Abbott is only allowed $10 55 in a payment of $7850. Mr. Samuel Saunders is made to pay $42.15, being only allowed a deduction of $5.74. Mr. John Diamond pays $29, and only gets $3.99 taken off. Look, also, at Lot 48: Mr. William Smallwood, the Government supervisor, pays a debt of $33.64 with $16.50, and another debt of $146.77 with $112.20 Mr. Peters makes him a present of the handsome sum of $51.70!! In the same way, Mr. Ewen McEachern pays a debt of

Literary Notes.

Conrent History, (Detroit, Mich., $1.00 a year) bas now entered its second year. The uniqueness of its conception — that of a quarterly devoted to news—arrested public attention from the start; and from ita first issue it has steadily increased in public favor. No effort or expense is being spared to make the magazine ideally perfect as an impartial and reliable record of facts. Current History is alone in its field, without any competitor Ite plan and method are absolutely unique, and the magazine must be actually seen and examioed before it can be fully understood or appreciated. It is needed by every one, ro matter what other periodicals he may be receiving, as a supplement necessary to the completeness of any list of reading matter. In other periodicals much space is devoted to ‘he discussion of questions from various points of view, the writer taking sides for or against, and generally assuming an scquaintance on the part of the reader with the subject-matter in question. The May number just issued condenses with admirable brevity, lucidity and accuracy the history of the world during the first quarter of 1892, A particulariy valuable feature is the cléir exposition’ of the various inter- national, political, social and labor questions of the day in Europeand America. A beauti- fal full-page portrait of the German Chancellor adorns the number, which contains also portraits of the Pope, Cardinal Manning, kev. Mr. Spurgeon, Ex-resident Cleveland, Sir John Thompson, Sir More!] MacKenzie, Walt Whitman and others, all of high artistic merit.

Srr,— Under the late Government we had justice in this part of the country; bat now, under this regime, we are mers neglected. A large number of people from different parts of the country went to Vic- toria this morning expecting the steamer’ M. A. Starr, slow as she is, to put in ag appearance about seven o'clock to take them to the city and return. But they waited in vain. ‘No boat was visible at nine o'clock, and the people had to return to their homes. One gentleman came to Vic- toria last night from Cape Traverse, and was assured by the agent here that the boat would make a return trip. Now, this is the way the people of this section of the country are treated. Farmers coming five miles with cattle are compelled to return home or wait eight or ten hours in Victoria and pay their board.

i think T voice the opiniou of a majority of the people here when I say that the far- mere and traders will resent thia kind of treatment when opportunity offers, and place men at the helm that will have some respect for their fellow-beings.

A Dennison, Texas, despatch of May 15th reports: Last night was ® night of borror in Dennison. Between 11 o'clock and 33) in the morning an aseassia brutally and pre meditately shot and killed four women, two | of them leaders of local society and two in- mates of disreputable houses. The fist victim was Mra. Haynes, wife of Dv. Henry f. Haynes, one of Dennison’s most «+ pected citizens.
