Although our Police Force cannot be at the best ef times, complimented for faithfully discharging their duty, it is depreciated that tvo often their inattention and cowardice reigns supreme.
On Saturday last about 4.30 p. m., there could be seen at Heartz pump on the corner of Great George and Fitzroy streets, a very intoxicated individual seated in a wagon but who had not the least centrol over the horse immediately ahead.
In attempting to dismount he fell help- lessiy at the horses feet, unable to lift him- self up. A Knight of the baton Policeman --—- ran from Mrs, Tieruey’s corner in the immediate vicinity and assisted the ‘* poor unfortunate” in regaining his seat, after which he in the coolest possible man- ner started off the herse at full speed. <A citizen near by seeing the wrong manner in which the Policeman wasacting remonstrated with him, remarking that it was his duty as a public servant to look after persons whe may accicentally become incapable. Mr. Policemar: B cooly remarked that he did not care, or his reply was couched in lan- guage equally careless.
Mr. Editor, the question naturally arises, Are our citizens at the mercy of a number of men who knowing their daty, do it not ! i have been informed that our Stipendiary Magistrate will always sereen the members of the police force when dereliction in duty is reported to him. It is to be hoped that a new state of things will be soon in- augurated, and the safety of our people be a matter of consideration.

Tunnel Under the English Channel.
The preliminary excavations for this en- terprise are being actively pushed torward at Sangatte, near Calais, at a spot where the cliffs have an altitude of seventy feet above the level of the sea at high water. A point has been chosen where the rocks of gray chalk which have to be traversed by the tunnel come to show their heads at surface of the soil. - On the opposite shere similar berings have been begun, se that the works are proceeding simul- taneously. The soundings that have been made during the last few years demon- strate that the base of the Channel con- sists of a compact mass of chalk, resting on
banks of slate. This mass, which is easy | enough to pierce, is said at the same time | to resist filtration sufficiently. 1t would, | therefore, present a substance excellently | adapted fur perforation. But what yet rewains to be proved is whether the suc- cession of these chalk layers will not dis- close some irregularities or ruptures which would render the enterprise impossible. The shaft at Sangatte has now reached a depth of nearly 200 feet, or about 150 feet saan the level of high water. It has a width of ten feet, and is lined with oak, so

‘Some six carloads of additional machinery

At the rent audit of the Hawarden ten- aniry Jast week, Mr. Vicars, land agent, announced on behalf of the Right Hon. W. KE, Gladstone, that in consequence of the continuance of their exceptional difti- culties, he had decided to again return them 15 percent. The Premier’s health, says our correspondent, was drunk by the tenants with great enthusiasm.
When the Prince of Wales came in view, at the head of the brigade of Life Guarda, at the recent review before the Queen in Windsor Park, wearing for the first time its uniform, with helmet and cuirass all com- plete, and bearing en his breast the full blue ribbon of the garter, such a joyous shout of welcome arose as could not have been hea from other throats than those of Britishers. The Queen’s eye brightened exceedingly-at this display of enthusiasm, in which she herself seemed to join, and she left the

At an entertainment given recently by the students of Paris in honor of the re- turned Communists, at which Rochefort and Blanqui were present, the toasts in- cluded that of ‘‘The Commune and its valiant defenders.” M. Rochefort pro- posed the health of the students, and M, Blangui attacked Opportunism, which he declared to be a greater enemy than Clericism. Hopes were expressed regard- ing the emancipation of women ; and the success of a European Republic and the annihilation of kings were ardently longed for. It was further suggested that it would be desirable to destroy the third estate; ty expedite the coming of the fourth estate and to-effect a social revolution.
A correspondent of writing from Port Bawrn, Inverness, to the North Sydney ‘* Herald,” under date of August 10th, says —‘‘ Much excitement now pre- vails on our shores by a recent discovery made by Messrs. Cameren, Murray, Pushie & Co,, of a wrecked vessel sunk in twelve fathoms of water, about a quarter of a mile from the shore.- The wreck is supposed to be the barque ‘‘ Bencleugh,”’ from Glasgow, Scotland, bound te P. E. Island, with a general cargo, which foundered on the 29th of December last, after having apparently been dismasted. Topsail sheets, etc., were picked up a few days after. Last week Mr. Cameron, invented what he callsa deep sea microscope, by which he was enabled te view the ship. Preparations are now beamg made to raise her and her valuable
