Tue Gop YierLp.—The Halifax Mail says ; “Our reporter was shown to-day a maguifi- cent lot of gold bearing quartz from the gald mine at Montague. One piece, about two inches long and 14 inches thick, contained about $200 worth of the precious metal. On Saturday afternoon, while working at the mine, the men came across a lot of iron quartz containing gold. The lot brought in to-day is valued at $3,500.”

Narrow Escarg.—While Dr. Ashley was holding forth on Queen Square this afternoon. a sloven lvaded with an organ was being driven through Market Street by atruckman named White. The sloven stopped and a number of children climbed upon the wheels, among whom was a hoy named Allan. The horse started and young Allan fell beneath the wheels, sus- taining some injuries. The boy was at once taken to Reddin’s Drug Store and examined by Dr. Taylor, who pronounced the injuries but slight. Afterward he was carried by his father to his home on Chest-

nut Street.

A Critical Situation. THE NATIVES ALARMED.

Cairo, July 31.

The advance of Nad el Jumi’s forces’, combined with the continual departure of British troops for the front has excited great uneasiness among the natives of the Delta, which region is almost completely denuded of troops. Only two battalions of infantry are left, while the cavalry and artillery have departed.

Col. Woodhouse reports that the main body of the insurgents, under command of Nad il Jumi, is encamped on the hills three miles north of Aba Sumbel. Active skir- mishing still proceeds between the Egyptian patriots and Dervish outposts. The Der- vishes who occupied the village of Toski were driven out by the Egyptians, leaving thirty-four of their number killed. A number of Dervishes were captured. Gen. oe and his staff have left Koroski for

Action in Respect to Behring Sea.

Orrawa, July 31.

A meeting of the Dominion cabinet was held to consider the seizure of Canadian sailing vessels by America cruisers in Beh- ring Sea. It was decided to forward to the Governor-General the telegrams receiv- ed from the Collector of Customs at Vic- toria, giving particulars of the latest seizure with a request that they be sent to the Im- perial Government, and that the latter be urged to adupt prompt measures to protect the rights of Canadians on the high seas.

The Massachusetts Rifle team left Lon- don last night for Livorpool and will sail to-day for New York. Last night the team was given a farewell dinner at Tholbort Restaurant by Major Williams. Besides the team and host there were present several members of the London Artillery Company, Sir John Puleston, M. P., the Consul General, the new assistant Consul General Moffatt, Gen. Woodman and Capt. Gratwicke.

Treaty With Japan.

Lonpon, July 31. The British Foreign Office is negotiating a Commercial Treaty with Japan. By the terms of the treaty, Great Britain surrend- ers the present judicial privileges Tof her subjects in Japan, in return for which con- cession the whole interior of Japan’ will be opened up to English trade. :

Inland Revenue receipts for July show an increase of $1,855.81 as compared with the same month last year; while the Cus- toms revenue shows an increase of $14,- 426.25 in the same comparison.
