At Atweed, Ont., last Friday evening. at the conclusion of a barn raising, a serious riot eceurred in which a man named James Broughton was struck on the head with a haad spike, by another man named Robbie, felling him and causing serious concussion of the brain. Robbie made for the woods and has not yet been captured. Physicians con- sider Broughton’s injuries fatal.

A ¥ASHIONABLE christening occurred at Quebec last week, when the infant son of Captain and Lady Streatfield was admitted into the church. The ceremony was per- formed by the Rector, Rev. G. V. Hensman, and the name given to the infant was ‘‘ Henry Sydney John.” The godfathers were His Excellency the Governor-General and the Right Hon. Sir John A. Macdonald, and the vodmother Her Excellency the Marchioness of Lansdowne.

Moruer Sr. Ancetina, of St. Joseph's Convent and Mother St. Cornelia of the Con- vent de Notre Dame, arrived from Montreal last evening. A large number of friends met them at the station and warmly welcomed them back. Mother St. John of the Cross did not come to this city as anticipated but remained in Summerside. She will visit the Convents at Tignish, Miscouche, and other places, and will likely arrive in the vity on Saturday next.

The Conservatives carry Annapolis, de- feating Attorney General Longley, and a new man’s return to support Repeal Bill in King's Co. R. L. Black in Cumberland, Hearn in Richmond, McKay and Chisholm in Cape Bret on, and Dr. Bethune (Independent) in Victoria, are elected.

T=e Halifax liquor dealers solidly sup- ported the Government candidates, and three-fourths of the Irish vote was also cast for them under the impression that Repeal in Nova Scotia was the same as Home Rule in Ireland.

A Successful Fisher man.

GLOUCESTER, June 1°.

The schooner Mayflower has arrived bringing 236 barrels of large mackerel. Capt. McKinnon says they were caught forty miles from the Nova Scotia coast. He reports that a large body of mackerel have gone east. He visited the harbors of Prospect and Liverpool and was treated as usual. No one ordered him from either harbors. At the latter place fishermen came on board and wanted to sell him shad; but he refused to buy as he thought they would inform on him. The Capt. thinks all the large mackerel have gone to the Bay.

The Fisheries Trouble.

WasHrneton, June 16.

The Cabinet considered the Canadian Fisheries troubles yesterday. It is under- stood that the Department of State has re- ceived advices from Minister Phelps con- firmatory of the press reports that the English Government is not altogether satis- fied with the course pursued by the Do- minion authorities in regard to the seizure of American vessels; also that the Depart- ment is infermed that there is every pros- pect of a satisfactory adjustment of the pending complications.

A Sorely Afflicted Ship. YarmourtuH, June i6.

The ship Vancouver, of this port, has arrived at Delaware Breakwater from Rio Janeiro. Captain Aaron Porten and the second mate, W’oodworth Landries, both of Yarmouth, died on the passage of yellow fever and were buried at sea. The carpen- ter and steward died at Rio Janeiro of the same disease previous to the vessel sailing.
