The bride who was given in mar- riage by Munro iviciver, wore a powder blue crepe dress. street length. while accessories and a corsage of white baby mums. She was attended by her sister-in-law. Mrs. Elmer Whitlock, who wore a navy blue and k crepe dress with pink and hits accessories and a corsage of pink baby mums. The bride's brother Elmer Whit- locir supported the groom.

After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Whltlock.

The bride an employee of the Irwin Novelty Co. was tendered a shower by the employees at which she received a table lamp as well as many lovely and use- ful gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Yong mi! reside in Toronto.

Senior closing Stella Maris school

The senior Closing ci Stella Maris School, North Bustico, took place on the evening of June lath. The Pastor, Reverend Eric Robin presided and Reverend Doctor .i.P. E. 0'1-lanley of St. Dunstan's Unl- vsrsity addressed the Graduates.

Reverend Father Peters of south Rustico. Reverend Father Dalton of Hope River and Reverend Father sharkey of Saint Dunstarrs Univer- sity honored the occasion. It

the Graduates to witness the en- thusiasm and sincere appreciation of over three hundred parents. relatives and friends.

To the strains of the procession- al. "Notre Dame", played by the Misses Audrey Gallant and Annette Bl-aoqultre. the High School stud- ents came up the side aisles to the front of the hall where the Gradu- ates took their places on the beau- tifully decorated stage. The nine boys and girls, the first Grade XI pupils of Stella Maris School, made a splendid showing.

The principal of the school in reading her report said. "We are justly proud of our Grade XI stud- ents. five from North Rustioo:

Hasel Gallant, Aivire LoClair. Jeanette Gauthier. Elizabeth Doyle, and Alyre Gallant; two

from south Rustico: Oswald Gai- lant and John Pineau and two

from Hope, Rover: Pauline Arsen- ault and Yvonne Doiron.

Oswald Gallant read the Balu- tatory. Hazel Gallant read the Valedictory in which she said that the year 1950 will always be a memorable one for the met High School Graduates of Stella Maris, since "Providence has placed this momentous hour of endings and beginnings in the heart, of the Holy Year."

An appropriate pageant, "Alma Mater's Gifts to her Children" beautifully presented by the High School pupils was indeed symbolic of all that Pastor, Teachers and Parents are awaiting from those privileged boys and girls in their different through life.

The chorus "God of All Nature" sung b the High School was a de- iightfu number. The "oremus Pro Poritlnce." lntoned by the boys' choir. added a touch of solemnity

and dignity to this memorable ev- enlnk. v Numerous awards and prices

were bountifully bestowed upon the Graduates through the generosity of parents and friends.

Reverend Doctor 0'Hanley in his address to the Graduates won all hearts by his kind fatherly advice. in his great love for youth he pointed out some very useful helps aiom life's way. He fully develop- ed the following points.

To be ever ready to seek the guidance oi their elders and bene- fit by the wisdom gained through experience.

'!lo to-operate with the efforts and plans of those experienced elders.

To be enthusiastic and whole- hearted in whatever work lies at their hand.

To be optimistic enough to keep a bright outlook on life.

To cultivate such a tender devo- tion to the Blessed Virgin as will heap ever before their eyes their school motto: "Respice stsllarn, Voca ilariam"-"Iiook to the star. Gall upon Mary."

during the Middle Ages, 3 num. ber of useful discoveries "were made about the human body. but not till the eighteenth century did medical science advance rapidly. Each year brings new discoveries as well as tools and new methods with which to work. But in every age there was born a few guid- llll lllhls who laid the foundations of all medical achievement. , when the American Continent was yet in the pioneering stage Dr. Epbrlam McDowell of Vir. ginla. found that one of his pati- ents. Mrs. Jane Crawford, had de- veloped alarge tumor, which. if allowed to grow, would eventually result in the patients death. The medicos of that day were of the opinion that such a tumor could not. be removed without endan- gering the life of the sufferer. Dr. McDowell had a different opinion, so he informed Mrs. Crawford that, if she were willing to submit to an operation, he thought it could be carried out successfully. In spite of the fact that the authorities threatened to punish him if he performed the operation, Dr. McDowell went ahead and cut out the growth. Mrs. Crawford was soon well again and lived for many years in excellent health. This was the first operation of its kind ever performed. and when the Dr. wrote a brief account of what he had done for a medical journal his story was not believed. indecd, his achievement was not recogn- ized until he had performed a number of similar operations, all 01 which were successful. 'l'oda,v such operations are quite common and the methods used do not vary greatly from the the one used by this famous pioneer doctor. I O O

The greatest danger in those days was gangerene. No one seemed to know how to prevent its settling in until a chemist nam- ed Louis Pasteur discovered the great secret-microbes which caus- ed infeciion in cuts and wounds.

This great man also found way to successfully treat rabies. a disease greatly feared by every- one. Soon the Pasteur institute was founded in Paris where the work of experimenting went on. So successful was the treatment of infectious wounds that the good news soon spread to other parts of the world and Louis Pasteur be- came internationally famous.

When he passed away at the age of 73 he was buried in the grounds of his own Institute.

Thus it may be seen how a hum- hie chemist completely changed medical science and made the world a safer place in which to live.

The discovery of the wonderful X-ray was made by another chum- ist named Wilhelm Rontgen who was born in Prussia in 184.3. Ronlgen was educated in Holland and in Switzerland and received his doctor's. degree when only iwenly-two. It was while teaching physics at the University of Wurz- burg that he stumbled across his great discovery. He died in Ger- many in 1923. i

Another famous doctor was Elias Mctachnikoff, a Russian Jew. who spent most of his life studying such creatures as spong-.s and other animals who have no back- bones. In 1908 this famous Rus- sian Doctor received the Nobel Prize in medicine for his discov- erp about the work the white blood cells do to protect mankind from disease. Metchnilroff remained a poor man all his life because most of the money he received went back into scientific work. Melch- nlkoff was born in 1845 and pass- cd away in 1916.

Then there is the story of Hideyo Noguchl (1876-1928). that brilliant Japanese doctor who sacrificed his life to the cause of humanity in his search for the yellow-fever virus. A member of the Yellow Fever Commission, sponsored by the Rockfeller institute, he was sent to Eucador in will where he did splendid work in helping to stamp out the dreaded disease. While there he discovered a tiny spiral organism in te blood of persons believed to ave been victims of yellow fever. Soon he became convinced that this or- ganism was the yellow fever germ itself. but he was mistaken. Un- daunted. however. he started all over again. This time he went to Africa; but unfortunately he became infeciad with the disease and died without having accom- plished the great dream of his life.

But the knowledge he left he- hind him proved a stepping-stone of great value for other scientists who took up where he left off.

And now we come to a young Canadian doctor, Frederick Bani- ing. whose discovery of insulin has brought new hope and health to thousands of people suffering from diabetes.

For this discovery Dr. Banting was knighted and in 102! he and Dr. J. J. Maclseod, of the Uni- versity of Toronto. were awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine.

The men mentioned in this brief article are only a few of the many who have devoted their lives to the science of medicine. but they stand among the greatest and must take their places in the hall of fame.
