OTTAWA. Sept. l2 - (C?) - Canada's 1947 wheat crop was placed today by the Dominion Eur- eau of Statistics st 852,200,000 bu- shels from an estimated seeded acreage of 23,000.00 acres yielding an estimated 14.7 bushels per acre.

This was a drop of approximately 6300.000 bushels from the first estimate of 358,700,000 bushels made A08. 13.

The new 352.200.000-lmahe1 total includes 338,079,000 bushels of spring wheat and 18,285,000 bush- els of fall wheat.

The new estimate also compares with a 194-6 wheat production of 420,725,000 bushels.

Oats production now ls plunged at. 288,249,000 bushels against a 194.6 crop of 400,069,000, barley produc- tion at 151225.000 against 159,807,- 000 a year age and rye at 14,018,- 000 against 7,448,000. The rye to- tal includes 10,818,000 bushels o! fall rye and 3.345.000 of spring rye.

In 1M0 the Bntish Government reduced the allocation for cereals for brewing’ by iii per cent and al- lowed no grain for distilling. The new Highway Code, distributed last July to 15,000,000 (fifteen million) household in Great Brit- ain. a booklet of 32 pages of road counsel, has tihls to say:

"Be sure that you are fit to use the road. ALCOHOL. even in small amounts. lowers your alertnessand sense of caution. A fraction of a second may make all the difference between safety and disaster. If you cannot give the necessary concen- tration. you are risking not only your ovm life but the lives of others. Many drugs have this effect and so also has fatigue."

In Northern Ireland temperance education in schools receives con- stant attention; in 1945 there were 3,000 pupils entered the annual ex- amlnatlon of the Temperance Ed- ucation Beard. {TIRE has concerned itself with the limztatlon of public houses. Efforts are made to pro- vide counter attrsctons by induc- ing authorties to provide facllites for non-alcoholc refreshments in pleasant surroundings. Sweden's Govern- ment provides over half a million dollars in the 1947-1948 Budget for treatment of alcoholics and sup- port of the hcmrs of inebriates: also $63,750 for the work of official temperance committees.
