TIIE I‘Ivantielists tell us that ,hrist‘s body was taken down from the Cross atid placed in a nearby tomb. They go on to say that the tomb was sealed with a large stone. .'ll‘.(l. after this was done. all withdrew.

The fittalitv of death hangs over the whole scene, We are not strangers to its mood. Who has not undergone sontething si- mlliar in his own life?

Yet now. for us. the blow is softened. We know that in one sense what has been shall be no more. We have lost someone whom we shall not regain. no on this earth.

RESURRECTION

But our thoughts do not end there. they sail beyond the con- fines of this narrow globe. and tltey fasten on the vision of a life that is yet to come. We lis- ten again. more attentively now. to His words: “I am the Resur- rection and the life. He who fol- lows me shall not walk in dark- ess "

And we recall His promise to those who believe in Him: “I will raise him up on the last day.”

Fair words and fine promises? But they are words filled with assurance and with hope be- cause the One who spoke them has Himself descended till“ the stillness of death and He has shattered the myth that death closes all.

Christ‘s resurrection on that first Easter morning marks the turning point in human history. The mute grief of Good Friday is turned into the boundless joy of a world made young again—a joy that is boundless because it

burst so suddenly and unexpect- edly on a dying world—a world that had already given up the ghost.

RESTORATION

The depth of the grief is the measuring rod of their joy. They had hoped. as all

was the One the world awaited. Good Friday destroyed their hope—-and their lives too. Easter restored everything. this time forever.

But that was a long time ago. and the world is growing old.

Christians seems to have faded somewhat in the hearts of their modern descendants.

This is surely one of the reas- ons that the Church has for hav- ing us relive and relive again the closing week of Our Lord's life. We must be brought to see that His Passion is but the prolo- gue to His triumphant conquer- ing of death.

TORONTO (CPl—Dr. M. C. Macdonald. chairman of United Church's committee on church extension. says It is un- fair to label as "superficial" "e- ligious life in new suburbs.

Speaking here today to com- mittee members from across Canada. he said: “A major por- tion of the residents of our new suburbs want the church and ILS They are demon- strating a readiness to great price to build edifices ade- quate for the programs of every division of congregational life.

“They give voluntary leader- ship tn a manner that often pm: the older churches to shame, and the people contribute to church funds and charitable causes to a degree that merits commendation."

Dr. Macdonald was replying to those who have been criticaI of religion and. in particular, religious life in the suburbs.

He reported that in the 17 years since the United Church began its extension program. 623 churches and church halls an 289 manses have been erected. During this period, 374 new congregations were formed.

Dr. )iacdonald said that since 1947 about 1.300.000 people have joined the United Church. and if the estimated growth of Can- ada's population is realized. 2.000.000 more people will be- come members of the United Church by 1981.
