writes :—The Party at East Point on Wednes- day last was a most decided success. The day was all that could be desired, and

pleasure seekers at an early hour might be seen wending their way to the tea grounds. The people of Souris, who are noted for their tea going qualities, turned out almost en masse to patronize the occasion. Promptly at twelve o'clock the fair ladies who had charge of the tables announced that tea was ready, when a substantial repast was served out to appetites made none the less keen by a morn- ing’s ride in a bracing western breeze. Besides the usual games engaged in on such occasions, dancing was enthusiastically kept up during the day to the wild and sweet strains of the bagpipes and violin. The cakes we auctioned off by C. C, Carlton and A. C. McDonald, Esq., and considering the very great number of them that were sold, brought good prices Father Gillis, who is deservedly popular not among his own parishioners, but among those of other denominations, did his utmost to make the day pass pleasantly. One striking, as wll as highly pleasing feature of this tea, was that it was conducted on strictiy temper- ance principles. Nothing intoxicating was allowed. This was plainly recognizable by the orderly conduct of all present. I am not aware of the exact amount realized, but I am told itis in the vicinity of $1,000 clear of all expenses,

Mersopist Cxurcn.—During our recent visit to P. E. Island, we embraced the op- portunity of attending Divine Service in the Methodist Church, Charlottetown. The building was erected in 1863, and ia capable of seating 1,600 persons. The Rey. John Burwash is the present officiat- ing clergyman, and is a man of marked ability. The most attractive feature is the music, under the jleadership of Prof. O. W. Friese, who has been training this choir for some time past, and who are now able to render a piece of music with credit to themselves and honor to their teacher. Mr. Friese has been giving private lessons to a number of the musical ladies of Char-

lottetown. The Methodist Choir con- sists of 10 soprano voices, led by Miss Barr; 6 Alto, led by Miss Moore; 6 Bess, led by Mr.

Taylor; and 2 Tenor, led by Mr. Davy. The organist, Miss Lillia Morris who is {an en- thusaist in music and a excellent perform- er, isin charge of the instrument. This choir stands unrivalled in P. E. Island] and on Sunday evening last the singing was very fine. Thechant after the prayer was rendered with grand effsct, the words were distinctly pronounced and the intonation was smooth and soft, while the time was simply perfect. Too much eredit cannot be given Mr. Friese for the very efficient state of this choir, and from his well known skill as a Professor of music must raise the musical status of that city to a high standard. We wish him every success in his efforts to rouse the musical feeling of the lovers of the Heavenly art.—-New

Suicide of a Physician.

FAILING TO SHOOT HIMSELF HE CUTS AIS THROAT WITH A PENKNIFE.

Ds. Macgregor, formeriy of Cape Breton, lately of Bruce township, Ontario, com- mitted suicide last week. According to the Kincardine Standard, he purchased a revolver and fifty cartridges in the town, and going intv a small barn in the neighbor- hood, he endeavored to shoot himself, but the cartridge being placed wrong end first, he failed to doso. He then took out his | penknife, having a blade of about three jinches in length, and severed the right | jugular vein, his professional skill enabling him to make the wound with such fatal effect that he lived but a few minutes. Deceased was formerly a school teacher, but having by his own exertions secured an education and a physician’s diploma, he practiced for many years at Lucknow and Ripley, and won an excellent reputation. Lately, however, he had fallen under the influence of strong drink and lowered him- self in public esteem; still no cause for this rash and‘deplorable action can be given.
