—King Humbert’s life was ineured for $7,000,000. It is believed that British compavies held the policies.
—The people of Canada are now paying twelve and a half millon dollars more in taxes to the Government of Canada than they ever paid before !
—The bulk of our bay crop has been secured in good order—and it was a better crop, upon the whole, than some persons thought that it would be.
—In 1896 the expenditure of the Gov- ernment of Canada, per head of the popu- lation, amounted to $8.14; in 1899 to $9.72. In 1896 the extravagant Tories were in office; in 1899 the Liberals, par excellence, who promised to reduced the expenditure by $3,000,000 or $4,000,000 a year.
—The Liberals have had their oppor~ tunity—a grand opportunity— to reform the Goverument of Carada as they prom- ised to do—and they have missed it. There is now more corruption im the ad- ministration of public affairs than ever, higher expenditure than ever, more taxes paid than ever, a heavier deb: than ever. Turn them out.
—According tothe London Times the figures given by Mr. Brodrick in parlia- meat show that the Cuinese are in possess sion of extensive supplies of guns and ammunition. Since 1895, firms in Great Britain have furnished the Chinese gov- ernment with 71 guns of position and 11,~ 749 rounds of smmuonicion; 123 field guns and 40,400 rousde; and 297 machine guas with over four n.iliion rounds,

[he promoters of the Whelan Monument Fund, iztend holding a Grand Demonstration on the Athletic Association Park, Charlottetown, on Monday August 27th, inst,, in aid of the above-named Fund.
Eating, drinking and dancing booths will be provided on an elaborate scale, and atterided by capable and attentive waiters.
Muttart’s Steam Riding Gallery tas been secured for the occasion, and Messrs. Miller Bros, of this city, have generously agreed to operate their splen- did Graphonpone, free of charge, in aid of the cause.
There will be a Bicycle Competition for a valuable medal and other prizes.
