Tas Boers went into the fight possessing every advantaze, Armed to the teeth, with every modern invention pertaining to warfare, admirably led, stubborn, courage- ous,in point of numbers between two and three to one, aud every man familiar with the ground upon which he fought ; the British unready, their eommanding gener- al and two-thirds cf his forces in Great Britain to be transported upwards of six thousand miles, the conditions such that they carnot use the strongest arm of their eervice—the navy,—in the position of a boxer who steps into a strange and un. known ring with one hand bound to his tide! Yet the British have held their owa all along the line and won Victories in the face of heavy odds; have transported

have organized three distinct campaigns all of which are now in successful pro- grese. Surely the British have, witbin the past six weeks, performed the greatest military feat of bistory!

Business in the village continues brisk, with lots of oate, pork, etc, moving to market. Several large shipments'of pork have already been sent to the maritime markets. The coasting vetsels are en~ gaged carrying produce to the markets across the gulf and bringing coal and other merchandise to this port for the mer- chante, Prominent among the hustlers are Captaine McKinnon, Hyde and Dunn.

The cheese factory closed its season’s cheese-making early in Uctober, and is now busy making butter, for which, owing to the excellent quality of the butter manu- factured, the demand is great. This season’s output of cheese exceeded that of last year; and the patrons have received good returns fer the milk supplied. The excellent quality of the butter and cheese manufactured and the general manage- ment in connection therewith is very cred- itable to the manufacturers, whose names are by words with ever consumer of their cheese and butter in this place—if not in England.

The members of P. A. Lodge, 10 GT, are neither lethargic nor inactive, and this fact will be verified on the evening of the 11th December, if nothing unforseen arises to impede the project now in contempia- tion. Soon the silent wheels of time wlll have completed their annual round ; soon the year gate will close and shut out fer. ever the eventful year of 1899, to join the throvg of by-gonee.
