Henry, a middle aged lady living at Lewis Mountain, near Butternut Ridge, started for church on Sunday, but finding no fire there, went into the house of her sister nearby and died in her chair a few migutes later. Heart failure is supposed to be the cavae of death.

Fine at St. Jony's.—A fire at St. John’s on Sundsy last destroyed the biscuit and to bacco factories of which Hon. Mr Harvey is bead. The loss of $80,000 is covered by in- eurapee, These buildings were burned at the last great fire, and wil oow take four months to reebuild.

People who have visited St. John’s, Nfl, since the big fire, say that it is a hard looking sight, although they report that there do not secm to be many people in need of any of the necessities of tile. Medical aid was summoned and MacKenna was re- moved to Connolly Bros. store, where he was kindly cared for until he wassufticient'y recovered to leave for his home. Mac- Kenna has been a sufferer from heart trouble for several years past, and has been taken down in this way on several other occasions.

S McPhee, a farmer, of the same place. The offence charged is that the said Shaw, on the 6th of September last, in the trial of an information preferred by him against McPhee before E. Hackett, a Just- ice of the Peace for the Provincej for all the purposes of the Fisheries Act and reg- ulations, ‘* falsely, wickedly, wilfully and corruptly” committed perjury. A number of witnesses from the country will be ex- amined,

Curistuas Tree.~ The Christmas Tree in St. Joseph's Convent was opened to the public this afternoon, and will be continued to-night and to-morrow aftarnoon and even- ing. The Christmas Tree is under the management of the ladies of the Sodality, which is a guarantee that it will be emin- ently successful. No pains have been spared to please all who attend. The different tables are well stocked, and there will alao be the amusements usual on euch occasions. Ali who desire to pass away an evening very pleasantly as well as help along a good cause should make a point of ca'ling at St. Joseph’s Convent this even- ing.

Dy Laruery’s Lecture —It is 5 fe to} say that his audience would have been much larger last evening if Dr Lathern had lectured upon a light and popular sub- ject, instead of upon ‘‘The English Bible.” It was, perhaps. too much to expect a crowd to come to hear about the inspiration of those who wrete the scriptures, or the struggles and sufferings and martyrdom of | those who translated them into the vulgar tongue and gave them to the English people —‘‘a priceless heritaga.” Only the thoughtful few take much interest in the scriptures. Still, there was a goodly num- ber to see and hear Dr. Lathern, and to applaud Dr WH. Johnson when he ex- pressed the thanks of the Epworth League and admitted the debt due to Dr. Lathera by the audience, Mr. Frank Beer occu- pied the chair.
