The heavy hand of ice. which prevailed in the Gulf of St. Law- rence. is melting fast and mov- ing southward, leaving large areas of open water in North- umberiand S t r a i t permitting commercial ships to operate vir- tually unaided by icebreakers, it was learned yesterday from the district marine agent in Charlottetown.

The latest serial survey shows that there is open water in the St. Lawrence River and along the south shore of Quebec. south of Anticosti Island. and along the east coast of New Bruns- wick from the Bay of Chalenr to Buctouche.
