The fine new steamship Princess drew Out from the wharf at sbarp seven, and about four hours later she was dex ked at Pictou Landing. The run across Was very pleasant, and Captain McLean, steward Chandler, purser Gordon and the other othcers of the Princess did everythine in their power to make those commit.ed t their care epnjoy themselves,

Upon arriving at Pictou Landing the excursionists boarded the especial in wait- Ing to Convey them to New Glasgow, but the train did not move out for alx ut haif an hour. This delay lessened the time to be passed in New Glasgow, and as there ia little to be seen at the Landing that is of interest the excursionists did not appreciate the enforced wait. However,the railway authorities are wholly responsible as the committee arranged to have the train proceed to New Glasgow immediately upon arrival of the steamer. :
On their arrival at New Glasgow the excursionists were met by a large number of people, acd were given a hearty welcome. The next hour or so was devoted to sup- plying the wants of the inner man and woman, after which sight-seeing began. Some drove out to the surrouand- ing country, others visited the stee! works, and others again spent the time in and about the city with friends. New Glas - gow is one of the most thriving towns in the Maritime Provinces, and its people are active and = enterprising. The »p- ulation is between 4,000 and 5,000, and the peace is preserved iby one policeman, who, at some distance, reminds ove of our own Marshal Cameron. Its streets and sidewalks are well kept, and there are many fine public buildings, handsome private dwellings, and churches of the latest +tyle of archiesture, The new High Schooi buildiog, erected at a cost of about $25,000, is a tine brick structure in every way creditable to the community, New Glasgow also boasts of excellent systems of waterworks and sewerace, and also has electric light and telephore services. Athletic grovads and a public park are the latest acquisitions of this well-ordered and go-ahead litt'e towa.
New Glasgow is also well supplied with newspapers, all of which are abiy condvctei and abreast of toe times in respect to what is going 90 in ard about the community in which they are published as yell as in Other sect ons of the p-ovince and the outside world. The Leader and Enterprise are published b> Messrs Dennis and Douglass, and ‘the Chronic'e by Mr. Mackenzie. New Glas- gow aleot asts of several good hotels. The Vendome isc wsitei'e railway strtion, with the Nortoik vear b_ and the Windsor a few blocks below. The latter is presided over by Mr. Geo. A. Pyke, a Halifax man who has hosts of triends in Charlo «.own, Mr. Pyke hc wade extensive imj ove- me*‘s i the Wiadsur since obtaining control of that well-known hostelry, and ite management is first-cless in every respect.
There ere wnany people in New Glasgow who are either natives of Prince Edward {siand or have spent some years therein and have pleasaxt recollections of the place. Mr. Richard Maynard, with his estimable wife and family, reside there ard they bave always a Warm coroer in their hearts for their Charlo.tetown friends, and are only too glad to meke it as pleasant as possible for those of them who m: y visit the “ Hab” of Nova Scotia. Prof. Smyth, who was for some time o ganisi of St. Peter’s Chu: -h, Charlo te- towa, is‘'so located in New Gla gow, and it gave him great pleasure to renew old frien’+! ps. Mr. Thomas Smith, who key atailor shop in Charlottetown some years ago, also lives there und was glad to see old fiienr's.
The excursiovists,aftera most pleasant visit, left New G!asgow at half-pa-t three, and he'f an hour Jater were on board the Princess at Pictou Landing. After a pleasant run of about four hours the Priocess landed its living freight in Char- lottetown. all feeling the better of their outing and delighted with every feature of the excursion. Refreshments were provided during the the trip by Mr. L. © Worthy, and patrous of his lunch counter were well pleased.
The Artillery Band accompanied the excursionists, and ther excellent playing

Tue Bacrires.—It is indeed pleasing to note the prominence given by the Caledon- ian Club at their gatherings to the music of the hills, Atthe Scottish gathering at Summerside tomorrew prize will be offer ed to all pipers who may appear on the grounds with their pipes. It may not be out of place to allude to the stirring effects on the hearts of Seottish Highlanders by the music of the hills, Although not the most melodious of musical instruments, no sound, however sublime, can charm the heart of a true Scotchman like the sound of the Pibroch., By il the Scottish soldier has been welcomed back from many a hard fought battlefield to the home of those he has left behind, recalling sweet mem- ories Of the past as no Other music could do.
Queer Manacement.—A correspondent of the St. John Sun, writing to that paper last week about a visit to P. E. Island, has the following to say: “The Island is look- ing ite very best now, and the stock phrase of the west side poet, “grand to be seen,” would hardly do justice to one’s impression, With beautiful weather, beautiful drives, mackerel fishing,yacht sailing, driving and lots of good food, we fiud very little to “kick” at. Noting by the ma> on the I, C.R. folder, published for the Isiand branch, that acertain beach on the north ride had an hotel, we decided to drive to it on Sunday and spend the day. We arrived shortly befere diuner hour, and when the bell rang, proceeded to the dining room after *ome others and took seats, which a gentleman said were not reserved. While conversing with the gentleman, a waiter appeared and requested our retirement as the permanent gaests had to he sup pli- ed first. “In about an hour we could get ourdinner.” We retired in good order. A few minutes Jater another St. Jobn man and a friend entered and took the same seats. Well, they were routed, and later on we heard one of them asking for the landlord, who was evidently in the kitchen behind a carving knife—a safe place. Tocut a long story short, the others waited the time specified and went in to the second table. Aluhough we waited and felt huugry enough, we did not re- enter, but drove back to the Davies house, fourteen « ile, wa ce one is treated like a human being and dined. We told the landlord of the beach hovel that while it Was quite right, perhaps, to favor perman- ent guests, and perhaps all at once might have been too many, it was not good judg-
met to allow anyone to take seats at a dining table and request their withdrawal, particularly a Iady.”
We venture to express the hope that there is not more than one place on the Island where such treatment would be accorded a visitor, It is a case of bad management and likely to do harm to other hotels on the North Side where the treatment ‘« all that can be des‘red. Although the writer does not specify the exact place at which this occured he says that the extreme end of the Brackly Point road bas no charm for him. In another part of his letter he sperks nighly of the hospitality of the people of the Island.

letters f:om Abyssinia, made some very insulting remarks as to the conduct of Italians in battle and
declared that many of them were taken prisoners by women. For this he was cnallenged, and fur this he has spent his gore. He returned from the field witha serious though not necessarily fatal wound la the region of the stomach.
