The late Edwin L. Barney of New Bedford, Mass., was for some years a law partner of General B. F. Butler.

Walter Drake of Montreal has given $25,000 to McGill university as an en- sfowment for the chair of physiology.

The Jate czar had a deep affection for Prince George of Greece. They used to compete with each other in trials of strength.

John Lawrence, master of the Llan- gibby hunt, in Monmouth, Wales, has hunted continuously for 70 years. He is now aged 90.

Jose Echegaray, Spain’s greatest play- wright, is 64 years old. He is an engi- neer and amathematician and was once a minister of state. He has written 52 plays.

To celebrate his silver wedding, the Marquis of Bute has given $5,000 to the town of Cardiff, the income to be given to poor girls who need the mony to get married.

Willis Van Devanter, the new assist- ant attorney general for the interior de- partment, is a successful lawyer and is 38 years old. He is a native of Indiana and a graduate of De Pauw university.

Governor Lowndes of Maryland ad- mits that as a farmer he has been a complete failure. Unlike most unsuc- cessful farmers, he says it was not the fault of the farm, but because he doesn’t understand the business.

Baron de Coubertin, who was active in the revival of the new Olympian games, has started a society in Paris whose object is to spread the knowledge of French civilization and of French work in scholarship and science in the United States.

Among the ancestors of Dr. Nansen was a Hans Nansen, born in 1598, who explored the White sea, spent many years in the Iceland trade, and wrote a geography which described arctic routes 80 well that a copy of the book was in use as late as 1841.
