How the Soudan was Lost,

The special correspondent of the London Daily News at Suakim sends an interesting letter regarding the the Soudan. He says “Not only io the Eastern Soudan, but in Suakim it self, the Egyptian administration has | hopelessly broken down, and the pre-| sence ofa high LEopglish official with | full powers can alone avert further and more serious The mismap- agement of the Egyptian authorities— | particularly of Suliman Pacha, the Governor-General of Eastern Soudan— may be explained on the hypothesis of | their sympathy with the rebels. The Eastern Soudan remained undisturbed until last July, when Sheikh Digna, an intimate friend of the Mahdi, whom he had just been visiting in Kordofan, ar- rived in the hilly country, near Suakim aod began to preach a holy war.
