Orrawa, Dec. 29.—Judging from the opposition which the Ostario members of the Cabinet are offering to Mr. Blair’s | proposal to acquire the Canadian Eastern | Railway of New Branswick there is small | prospects of the dea! going tbrough.

The Ontario Minisiers do not see that | the country is going to get full value for | the $1,200,000 which Mr. Blair is willing | to pay for the road,

The proposed expenditure is considered | outrageous in view of the fact tbat not) long ago the Bank of Montreal, which has | a lien on the railway, was willing to part | with it for a suno considerably less than a | million.

Undervaluation of Goods by a: Montreal Firm.

Mowtreat, Dec. 27.—If the story told by the Shareholder, a weekly trade paper, is correct the largest operation in the under- valuing of goods has been discovered by the customs Officialaever known in Canada. Messrs. Fitzgibbons, Schafbaillin & Co., Victoria Squire, are the accused firm, and the amount of the undervaluation is placed at $400,000. They are importers of Euro-

pean dry gcods, woolens, acd tailore trimmings with a house in Berlin, Germany. It is said

that the firm entered goods at the custom house on fradulent invoices, prepared in Berlin and forwarded to this country.

Ortawa, Dec. 27.—D. C. McTavish, of Ottawa, bas been appointed Senior Judge of the County Court of Carleton, Ont., to succeed Judge Ross, who has resigned on account of anvanced age.
