Fer a fourth time Sir Wilfrid Laurier was asked, last night, whether the return- ing Officer had been appointed for West Prince and for the fourth time the Pre- mier explained that nothing had been dove. The thing is getting monotonous. Sir Wilfrid Laurier informed the Quebec delegates yesterday that there will be no railway bonus this season.

Krxesrox, Jamaica, March 19.—By a dymanite explosion in @ government store- | house on Montego Bay, eight men were | killed and many injured.

The stock paid up is $150,009 and it is exclusively in the bands of Halifax people—32 citizens. The company is evidently alive tothe impur- tance of the trade between this port, New= foundland, Liverpool! and Manchester, for in the near future they hope to add by purchase one if not two steamers to their fleet. This would enable them to give a regular fortnightly service to and from Halifax. They bave the assurance of importers, it is understood, that if this is done they will receive their undivided support.
The steamers owned hy the company are the Ulunda and the Barce ona, besids which the company has chartered the ateamer Kilmorock, which leaves London for this port on the 26th,

The value of a local market is strict- ly exemplified in Fredericton, where the ruling price of good hay is $2.00, A hay vealer ia St. John aseured the Sackville Post last week that in 30 years experience he had not seen such abso'u e dept: ssion in the business. Thrre are some 700 cattle from Oatario shipped weekly from that port and hay for them is landed along side the steamship at $750 per ton . A namber of eauses have contributed to this result. The lumber cut this year will be ore half what it was Jast winter, and there ia no market amongst lumber men. Hay raised in covotries along the border is shut out to United States markets by the tariff and it is reeking other outlets. The price of other feed is abnormally low and comes in competition with hay. Corn meal at $180 per bag almost unpre- cedented, Added to these causes, too many farmers have abandoned the old fashioned method of raising plenty of fat beeves for the ma:ket and have gone into shipping their hay. 4b
Post concludes that the moral of all this is for our farmers to keep more stock and
feed their hay. Cattle can be shipped from St.John to England, as well from
Westmorland as from Ontario. The bus- iness has settled down to a basis now, and
gives eertain returns at all events, which it did not a few years ago, when some of our operators plunged into (te business.
