On Wednesday last Dr. R. Macneil), of this city, was invited to attend a meeting of the Masonic Ledge at Stanley Bridge, where be was presented with a magnifi- cent gold Past Grand Masters jewel. Grand Maste~ Macmillan and Past Mas ters T. A. Macleanand Darrach were present, An address was presented to the doctor, who has been a member of Prince Edward Lodge since its formation in 1885. He has always been active in the iuteresis of Masonry. He isaleo an active member cf the Supreme Council for Canada of the gcottish Rite, and te deputy tor this Pro- vinee.

The jewel was presented by Past Grand Master Maclean at the request of Worship- ful Master Fred M. Morrie. On the back is inecribed,—

SITUATION IN PEKIN.

‘Text of Dr. Morrison’s Despatch to

The Times

The following is the text ef Dr. George Ernest Morrison’s despatch to The Times:

“There has beee a cessation ef hostili- tee here (Pekin) since July 18, but for fear of treachery there has been no relaxa- tion of vigilance. The Chinese soldiers cou~ tinue to strengthen the barricades around the besieged area and also the batteries on top of the imperial city wall, but in the meantime they have dicontinued firing, probably because thy are short of am muvi'ion,

“The maio bodies of the imperial sol; diers have Jeft Pekin m order io meet the relief forces. Supplies are begianing to come in and the condition oi the besieged is improving. The wounded well. Our hospital arrangements are ad. mirable and one hundredand fifty cases have passed through the hospital.

“The Tsung Li Yamen forwarded to Sir Claude McDonald a copy of a despatch telegraphed by the Emperor to Queen Victoria, attributing all deeds of violence to banditts and requestiug Her Majesty’s assistance to extricate the Chinese Gov- ernment from its difficultiese The Queen’s reply is pot stated, but the Chinese min- ister in Washington telegraphs that the United States Government would gladly assist the Chinese authoritiee. This des- paich to the Queen was sent to the Tsung Li Yamen_ by the grand council on July 3rd, yet the day before an imperial edict had been issued calling on the Boxers to

render loyal and patriotic service in exterminating the Christians. The edict also commanded

viceroys and governors to expel all missionaries from China and to arrest all Christians and compe! them to renounce their faith, Other decrees applauding the Boxers speak approvingly of their burning Out and slaying converts. [he leaders are stated in adecree to be princes and ministers.

“On July 18 another decree made a complete volte face du to the victories of the foreign troops at Tien Tein. In thie decree, for the first time and one month after the occurrence, an allusion was made to the death of Baron Von Ketteler, the German minister, which was attributed to the action of the local brigands, a!though there is 10 doubt that it was premeditated and that the aseassination was committed by an imperial officer, as hie survivor, Herr Cordes, can testity.

“The force besieging the legation con- sists of the imperial troops under General Tung Lu and General Tuog Fah Siang, whose gallantry is applauded in military decrees, although it has consisted in bombarding for one month: defencelees women and children couped up in tbe legation com; vund, using ehell, shrapnel, round shot and +xpandiog bullete. Chinere throughout acted with character istic treachery, porting proclamations as turing us of protection, and the same night made a general attack in the hope of sur- prising us.

“There isetill no news of Pei Tang cathedral. The wounded number 138, { including the American surgeon Lippitt, severely wounded, und Captain Myers, who is doing well. Seven Americans have been killed.

‘- All the ministers and members of the legations and their families are in good health. The general health of the com-~ munity is excelleut, and we are eontented- ly awaitipg relief.”

After enumeiating the casualties al- ready reported, and giving the total of deathe, including Americane, as 56, Dr, Morrison proceeds as tellows:

** The Chinese undermined the French legation, which is now aruin; but the French minister (M. Pichon) was not prerep , baving fled for protection to the Britieh Jegation onthe first day of the riege.

“The greatest peril we suffered duzing the ereye was from fire, the Chinese in a det+rm-vation to destroy the British lega- tion by burning the adjoining Han Lin Yuen (nationa) college), one of the most raced buildings in China, sacriricing the uu que library.”
