The News Eclipse despatch says: ‘‘ The Southern Pacific passenger train west from here on Wednesday morning, was boarded by highwaymen Wells, Fargo & Co.’s messenger was knocked down, gagged and compelled to surrender the keys of the safe, from which fifteen hundred dollars were abstracted. About sixteen hundred dollars were secured from the passengers. Besides the money taken from the safe of the Express Oompany they rifled it of 12,000 doliars of other valuables. ‘When the train neared Rogers Station it slowed up for a bridge and the rebbers jumped off and cut across the country isto Merico.

Among the witnesses in the Guiteau trial to-day was Rev. Mr. Shippen, of Washing- ton, who testified that the usual topics of conversation between himself and the prisoner were Conkling, Garfield imbroglio, and the New Testament revision, and on no occasion did the prisoner exhibit more | excitement than any other person might do. | Mr. Shippen’s testimony is considered of | the highest value to the prosecution.

Mrs. Dunmere, fermerly wife of Guiteau, teok the stand. She was married to the vrisoner in July, 1869. Scoville objected to the testimony unless a record of proof of divorce was shown, and the witness with- drew, Corkhill remarking he would intro- duce the witness later after the necessary copy of Court records had been obtained.

Dr. Noble, the young physician at the jail, testified that Guiteau once said: ‘If the President should die I would be con- vinced my inspiration was from the Deity, but if he should recover I would be in doubt about it. Witness thought the prisoner a little impatient of restraint, and at times a little nervous as a man in his position would naturally be, but perfectly Bane,
