Thomas G. Plant Co Reduces Working Hours.

The Thomas G. Plant company, manu-

shoes. running the largest factory in the world of women’s flne shoes, has reduced the working day of its 2000,employees to eight hours a day.

Two years ago the Plant Company, with a pay roll of $1,000,000 per annum, decided to adopt the nine-hour system. They believed that, under proper conditions, their factory could produce as many shoes with the nine-hour system as with the usual 10-hour shoe factory day. By adopting special methods in keeping the employed, requiring promptness in attendance. the newdeparture was made asnccess in results, and recently it was decided to still further reduce the hours to eight instead of nine.

This is the result of a perfect system in supervising every detail of an immense

business. Today the Thomas G. Plant company enjoys the unique distinction of having voluntarily put into effect an eight-hour syswm without any change at . all being made in the wages of their week bands, which is one-fifth of their total force employed; and, further,the company claims that under conditions now enforc- ed, the piece work help can earn as much in the eight-hour day as they formerly earned in the ten-hour day.
