A performance of this. nature cannot be written of as an ordinary concert or lecture, The pictures represent the world famed Passion *play of the Bohbem- jan peasants, und aside from their sacred interest they are of importance because illustrative of people’s devotion. The | purpose of the pictures is well understood, land nothing ceed be said of the profound solmenity and significance of the themes traated.

Tnere were given a number of tableaux from the old;Teatament events — Adam and Eve in the Garden of Een; the temp- tation and the fall; the manna falling io the desert,and the finding of the child Moses in the bulrushes. Next in the series were shown the angel appearing to Mary and the principal events in the life of che blessed Saviour, from. the manger to the cross. In some, hundreds of the peas- unts were seen portrayiag the various characters and moving as in life. The closing picture was the ascension.

The pictures were accompanied by an explanatory lecture and several sacred solos. The Paesion play will be shown again this evening.—Hx. Herald.

The principal speaker of the evening was Mr. Hubbard, of Sussex, Editor of the Co-operative Farmer. He urged the importance of eacientifiic edu- cation for the farmer. Puerto Piatra, San Domingo, Aug 8. —Senor Alvarez, Minister of Finance, aad Senor Cordro, with one bundred men went to Monte Christe, and united with seven hundred men who it is nuderstood had been assembled on behalf of the gov~ ernment for the restoration of order.

Armed eteamers are watching the coast to prevent the landing of an insurrectiou~ ary expedition, should such a thing be at~ tempted.

The Governor of Monte Christe has three hundred men under arms for the preservation of the palace.

The situation is considered grave.

Roth Governments Denounced By Mr. Duncan Marshall — Prohihitionists Should Vote Tasm Down.

There was a good attendance at the public meeting in the VM. ©. A. hall lastevening. The mecting was in the in- tereets of the prohibition movement, aod the chair was occupied by Mr. RK. C. Goff.

The meeting was ‘inst addressed by ‘Eyangelist Whiston, who prefaced bis ‘remarks with a vocal solo. Mr. Whis:on ‘spoke of Christian citizenship as the greatest moral question,.and expressed the opinion thatevery Christiam should be a politician, Christians allowed polities to be controlled by cormept and selfish men, benee the existingcorruption. The Cburch of Christ held the balaace of power, but failed to exercite it. There should be the same standard of morals for men and wo- men. All Christians should stand by ibeir eclors acd make their influence felt.

The byma “Onward Christian Soldier” was then sung, efter which Mr. Duncan Marsball referred to prohibition as the great question. The way to wipe out the liquoa traffic is by probubitory legislation. The people have voted for prohibition, but the government will not give it to them claim- ing that the majority was not large enough. Much has been said Jaiely about corrup- tion. But the corruption in the plebiscite campaign in Quebec was not equalled by the West Elgin, West uron or Brockville. Mr. Marehal! followed up this statement by[a short arraigoment of the government and its ministers who had gone contrary to the will of the people as expressed = at the polls. He pointed out thatthe clear duty of probi~ bitionists is to vote down the Federal Gov~ ernment which insulted the intelligence of the people of Canada in regard to the pro- hibition queetioa and the Provincial Gov~
