All the Canadians in South Africa will return home by way of Enyland.

Pretoria, Sept 5.—I is reported that General Delarey, the Boer Commander,

has died of wounds received at Elandg River.

Anxious to Have Pekin Evacuated

Lonpoy, Sept. 5.—Today’s despatches from Shanghai and Tien Tsin refer to the hopeless confusion and mismanege- ment of the Chinese telegraphic system which may probably account in part for the delay in getting news from China. Another reason for delay doubtless is the anxiety of the Chinese authorities to pro- cure the evacuation of the capital.

According to Shanghai advices Li Hung Chang has wired the Chinese minister in London as follows : Minister has persuaded Russia to leave Pekin. You are useless if vou cannot persuade England. ”

It is asserted that Earl Li has pro- mi ed Russia three Manchurian provinces if she secures the withdrawal of the al- lied forces from Pekin and favorable peace terme from the powers. Both the Empress Dowager and Li Hung Chang are said to be lavishinz money to attain these objects. There is no sign as yet of any decieion on the part of the powers regard- ing the Russien proposale.

Japanese papers unreservedly condemn the evacuation of Pekin, and bint that there is a secret compact between Gers mavy and Russia to the great detriment of Great Britain and Japan.

Duffy, the pioneer priest in St. Joseph s parish, will be unveiled w-th appropriate cere- mony by Bishop McDonald on Sunday, Sept. 16th inst.. Services shall begin at 9.30 a. m., fellowed by a Pontifical High Mass, during which the consecration sermon will be preach- ed by Rev. Dr. Doyle, one of Fr. Duffy’s successors in St. Joseph’s, and for many years the beloved pastor of the same. A collection in aid of the monument fund will be taken up during the services. In the afternoon the Sacrament of Confirmation will be administer- ed by Bishop McDonald.

with white ribbon, while the groom was snpported by Mr. Arthur Trainor, of Hope River. After the marriage ceremony the

bridal party drove to the paternal home of tle bride where a number of the b.ide’s friends were united and everything went merry asa marriage bell till the wee sma’ hours of the morning. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful presents which tell better than words the esteem in which those who had the pleasure of her acquaint ance.
