Usually neither the individual nor the community suffered too much from this stale of affairs, and the teacher was left with a selective group of pupils. Such a group was only too eager to learn-the read- ing prohlem (or any other teach- ing probieml became less in the higher grades.

How different things are now! (for better or worse according to your own ncrsonal slant-no nnc can give the final answer). The opportunities for a man for wo- manl to make the most of him- self and be most useful to the com- munity without a high school ed ucation at least. are almost nil. That and the. Familv Allowance are keeping children in school lon- ecr and teachers are having a larger and more mixed trroup -o teach. And at the same time. the Importance of reading has grown immeasurably! There is no line of work where information cannot be found in books. Farming has

Approximately seven hundred exhibits have been entered by well over one hundred exhibitors. This, the first Harvest Exhibition in many years. looks- as if it is gointl to be an outstanding showing of P.E.l. products.

WINTER FAIR

The 43rd annual Maritime win- ter Fair. under the Q of the Maritime Stock Breeders associa- tlon, will be held this year from Oc- tober 27th to November 3rd. The interest which is being shown in the three Provinces seem to indi- cate that this year's show will be one of the largest in Its long his- tory. In addition to the livestock, horticultural and other crops there will be many exhibits and new in- novations.
