Hello UPEI, how are things going? I hope everyone is doing ok in there midterms. I guess it won’t be long until our final ex- ams begin. Best of lick preparing for them. I would like to tell you about a new service that I am try- ing to get rolling here at UPEI. I like to call it a “Believe and suc- ceed campaign.” For me to ex- plain this I will give you a little background about myself.

When I left high school in 1984, I entered the waking world with no intention of coming to university. The fact is I didn’t think I was cut out for academic life. I worked at a local ser- vice station and really didn’t ex- pect a whole lot to happen with

my life. Like anyone, I did have big dreams, but I didn’t have the motivation to realize them. I was very lucky because that the service station had many cus- tomers that were well-to-do busi- ness men and women. These peo- ple always impressed me, and I wanted to be like those successful people. I happened to mention this to some of these customers. What I got in return was tremen- dous encouragement. One man suggested that I even try going to university. Well, after numer- ous conversations with these peo- ple, my thinking became much more positive. I don’t know if I’ll make it to be as successful as some of those I pumped gas for, but at least they made me see that a positive atti- tude is the first step to any suc- cess.

As you may know, the Stu- dent Union often sponsors speak- ers to come to the Robertson Library Pit to speak to stu- dents. This is becoming quite expensive and so we can’t spon- sor very many of these people. What I would like to dois in-

Angele Foley, UPEI 1988 Sci- ence graduate. She is on of th brilliant young scholars of the Is- land, excellent in several fields of study and in love with Mathe- matics.

When she applied for th NSERC and the MacKenzie King graduate scholarships, she had to compete against the very best students across Canada. She won them both. ;

Adding to those an entrance scholarship to the University of Waterloo, she has won a total of $20,000 for her first year of grad- uate studies.

She is doing a Master’s Degree in Mathematics.

She does miss the Island a lit- tle. It is the first time she has

been away from the family. But she likes Waterloo, and her stud- ies are going very well.

This may seem a bit trivial, but is this supposed to be funny? If so, will someone please explain the Humour in it to me, as it has gone completely over my head.
