Let acircle be formed by a few per- sons joining hands, and one member of the circle be securely blindfolded, that is in such a way that he will enter into a darkness so dense that it may ‘‘be felt.’’ To secure this desired trick dark- ness, fold a pair of kid gloves into sev- eral thicknesses and place like a pad one over each eye, with an ample hand- kerchief bound tightly over all and around the head. Now let a card be se- lected at random from a pack, take great care that no one sees any other card of the pack, even for an instant, then place where all can see it except of course the blind man. The rest of the circle must now fix their minds and gaze upon the card with every bit of earnestness they have in their nature. In the meantime the blind man must put himself into a quiet, passive ‘‘Bar- kis is willin”’ state of mind. He will soon begin to see (scientific authority for this, remember,) indistinct ebjects floating in the darkness. Soon they will begin to take shadowy shape, then dis- appear, take more definite form, and finally the card selected will appear.

Mr. Hudson declares that out of the six in the company when he witnessed this experiment each scored a sufficient number of successes to remove the re- sult from the domain of coincidence. It is well to bear in mind that sometimes the information is conveyed from one mind to another allegorically, for in- stance, during the evening mentioned the ten of diamonds appeared as ten flashing diamonds.

A SWINDLING BICYCLIST.

He Rides a New Machine Each Season at a Cost of SE or $10.

‘‘I had gone up against a varied as- sortment of swindling games since I went into the bicycle business,’’ said the manager of adown town bicycle agency yesterday, ‘‘but before I got in- to this line Iwas in charge of an in- stallment heuse and before that was cashier in a Broadway hotel, so I had my eyeteeth cut, you may say. But I’ve anearthed a gentlemanly crook whose game is not only novel, but smooth as silk, and he is absolutely the limit in my wide acquaintance with bicycle swindlers.

**Each season for three years to my knowledge this fellow has sported a new machine of standard make, with all the up to date accessories. At the end of the season he discards that wheel, and when spring comes around, with young, ten- der, green blades of grass in the parks snd equally green and tender chumps like myself doing business in the bicy- cle line, this chap will be s¢en on an- other wheel, the newest model, the most popular make and with the latest trim- mings. His season’s riding doesn’t cost him over $10, and that’s hia record for three years, if not longer.

**I'll tell you how he does it. In the first place, he has an honorable pro- fession and a wide acquaintance. In the next place, he is naturally a swindler. In the last place, we bicycle dealers and agents will stand a great deal before acknowledging that we have lost a deal or a wheel.

‘‘The modus operandi of the gentle- man whose bigycles have been dirt cheap for him is as follows: Several years ago at the beginning of the road season he presented his card and his im- pressive personality at the down town agency for a well known make of bi- cycle.

“*T don’t want to waste time in pok- ing over cheap articles,’ he said. ‘I want only the best and that quickly.’

“Of course the salesman was delight- ec, The professional man’s eye lighted on a wheel that was ‘one in a thousand,’ as the inakers of rifle barrels say. He examined it critically, put in a few ob- jections to the make of tires and the saddle, just to show that he knew ail ahout wheels and wheeling, and he wound up by saying carelessly:

***Ship it to my home address and send the bill to my office. I shall ex- pect to try the machine and test it to my satisfaction.’

“The salesman, a. trifle flustered, - back to theeredit clerk, showed the customer’s professional card, and was told to get a cash deposit of $25, two references, and an agreement to pay 86 much a month on the price.

‘‘Mr. Professional Man beamed upon the salesman, furnished the references, giving the names of two gentlemen well known on Newspaper row, and in commercial circles, but—he had only $10 to spare, and presumed that would suffice asa guarantce of good faith. His references proved O. K. He got the wheel. All the firm received was that solitary payment of $10. They allowed the first month to expire withont send- ing him a statement. The next month, June, they respectfully requested a pay- ment on account. In July, August and September ditto, the requests increasing in businesslike terms, but with no per- ceptible effect upon the customer, who meanwhile rode that $10 wheel for all he was worth. In October the credit man complained to the head of the firm, and a peremptory notice was sent to the Gelinquent. It read something like this:

‘* ‘Sin—Yonu have used the Spokeless machine No. 0000 six months and paid only $10 on account. If you do not call atonce and settle in full, we shall be compelled to forcibly remove the wheel from your possession.’

“The gentlemanly crook bad expected just such a denouement. He promptly replied, curtly informing the firm that the Spokeless wheel did not come up to representation, and that unless it was removed at once from his premises he should be obliged to putit in- storage at the expense of the dealers.

“‘Each year since that fellow has played the same game on some bicycle house which does business on the in- stallment plan. Not only is he not ashamed of such contemptible trickery, but he actually boasts of his success in getting a season’s sport on a new stand- ard wheel for little or nothing.’’—New York Sun,
