In recent years, Memo- rial University has not exactly been one of the AUAA's pow- erhouses but do not mention that around UPEI.

The SeaHawks com- pleted weekend sweeps in Men’s and Women’s basket- ball as well as in Women’s Volleyball last weekend and led their respective Panther opponent to scratch their heads.

The Volleyball Panthers dropped a 3-1 decision on Sat- urday and were defeated 3-2 on Sunday. UPE] falls to 3-3 on the season with their next action coming against Dalhousie.

It is bad enough trying to watch a Panther hockey game at the poorly designed Civic Centre. What is even more frustrating are all the young children running around like they have eaten a whole box of chocolates.

The Civic Centre has turned into a drop-off centre for parents. At some games you would think that there are more kids at these games than adults.

The mans hockey team was the lone winner last week- end as they edged Mt. Allison 6-5. Mike Harding had a pair of goals and Todd Walker scored at 3:49 of overtime to give UPEI the win. The Pan- thers improved to 5-8 on the season and appear to be turn- ing around their 96-97 cam- paign.

UPEI Has the laziest, most unenergetic fans around

What is it with UPEI stu- dents? Last year when the hockey team was in the finals students lined up for tickets and the Civic Centre was packed. When they ran out of tickets students had the edacity to say “well it’s not fair.” Well it is fair. They had a certain amount of tickets to give out and they probably would have given out more if there were more students attending the games. It is the same typical PEI tradition; if a team is

losing “the hell with them.” If the team is winning then ”yea go all the way!” What do students want? That is what I have been trying to figure out for the past few years. I have tried everything in the book to get students out to the games. We had a pre- game warm-up at the Barn, no one came. We had a bus take students to and from the Civic Centre, no onecame. We gave out prizes, gave out free drinks, we tried everything to entice people to come to the games but still no one came. This year has seen a few

home games for the winter sports. Hockey still has its

faithful fans with their long green and white knitted hats and a courageous guy wearing the run down pink panther. My problem is that these are the same peopleatall the sport- ing events. Lets take a look at other Universities, I realize that not every university has a high fan support, but lets look at the ones that do. They go absolutely balistic at the games. They make the visit- ing teams leave with their tails between their legs. This is what we should be doing. This past weekend at the basketball games there was a fair amount of people out but the majority were the general public. NO STUDENTS were to be found. Except the faithful few (FY P and guests). Do you (the students) not realize that ifall ofus goto the games it will make it that much more fun? We have over 2000 students attending this University and only a handful attend. Our Student Union who is there to repre- sent the students isn’t even there. I have yet to see our Universities own President

Kids Causing Havoc Hockey Fans Overwhelmed by 3 Apple High Ankle Biters

My problem is not nec- essarily with the kids watch- ing the hockey games, rather it is with the kids who are there game after game playing in the halls and running around the whole building.

“| havenoproblem with kids at the games but they have to be supervised by their par- ents,” said Kent Driscoll after attending last weeks Sunday hockey game. I agree with him 100% because even though some kidsare sitting in

they are still spitting on peo- ple and swearing. Maybe the announcements about adults making a good example for the kids should be the other way around. The adults are doing fine it is the kids that are the problem. Is it going to result in the campus police sitting in the stands and moni- tor the kids? I don’t think that it should come to that, the su- pervision should come from the parents.

If you attend a sporting

the stands watching the game, event at the Sports Centre you

will not see any kids running around. Why is this? Maybe it is because the kids at the Civic Centre are local kids, I just don’t know.

A possible solution to this problem might be charg- ing the kids, therefore they won’t be there unless they are with there parents. Another solution and one ~~ _I think should be implemented, is that no child is allowed into the Civic Centre unless they are accompanied by an adult.

Who’s jurisdiction does

E.Eperly attend a sporting event (past President W.Elliot is taking care of that for her, I guess?) The fault is on every- one at this University, from the poor students right up to the rich and famous (and we all know who they are).

I close this letter of questions with some thoughts. These athletes put in count- less hours of practice and studying (yes,they do study not like some of you think) and they go out there to per- form for you and the Univer- sity. How can you feel proud when there is no one there to cheer you on? No classmates, no prof’s, no council, and no President. They need our sup- port and for us to show them that we are behind them not just during playoffs, but the whole year. I realize that I will probably be hunted down by students and administration but hey I realize that there are students, prof’s and some ad- ministration that go to the Varsity Games but there are a lot of you lazy couch potatoes who are not studying but just killing time, who should be at

the games.

this matter fall under. The manager of the Civic Centre? Or maybe it is the jurisdiction of UPEI Athletic Director Barb Mullally? Regardless it must be dealt with between the Uni- versity and the Civic Centre.

It is evident that these kids are causing havoc at the hockey games and if you are like me and some of my fel- low fans, ithas to change dras- tically or these 3 apple high ankle biters might end up 3 apple high stepped on ankle biters.
