I have heard it said that the saga— cious and admirable naturalist whom wo lost not long ago, Mr. Darwin, once owued to a friend that for his part he did not experience the necessity for two things which most men find so necessary to them—poetry and religion; science and the domestic affections, he thought, were enough. Toa born naturalist, I can well understand that this should seem so. So absorbing is his occupation with nature, so strong his love for his occu- pation,that he goes on acquiring n atu al knoWledge of and reascning upon it,and

has little time or inclination for think- ing about getting it related to the de-

sire ia man for conduct, the desire in muo for beauty. He relates it to them for himself as he goes along,so far as ho feels the need ; and he draws from the domestic affections all the additional solace necessary. But then Darwins are very rare. Another great and admir- able master of natural Faraday, was a Sandemanian. to say, he related his knowledge to bis instinet for coudact and to bis instinct for beauty, by the aid of that respect- able Scottish secretary, Robert Sande- man. And so strong in generalis the demand of religien and poetry to have their share in a man, to associate them- selves with his knowing, and to relieve and rejoice at,that for one man amongat us with the disposition to do as Darwin did in this respect, there are fifty, prob- ably,with the disposition to do as Fara- day.

Education itself lays hold upon us by satisfying this demand, Professor Hux- ley holds up to scorn mediawval educa- tion, with its neglect of the knowledge of nature, its poverty even literary studies, its formal logi¢ devoted to ‘showing how and why that which the church said was true must be true.’ But the great mediwval Universities were not brought into being, we may be sure, by the zeal for giving a jejune and contemptible education. ings have been their nursing fathers, and queens have been their nursing mothers, but not for this. The medieval Uuni- versities came into being because the supposed knowledge delivered by Serip- ture and the Church se deeply en- gaged men’s hearts, by so simply, easi- ly, and powertully relating itself to the desire for conduct tne desire fos beauty. Household Hints.

As a garnish for roast spare rib, or for pork chops, cut some tart apples in eighths, drop them, after peeling, into boi'ing lard ; when crisp on the outside remove them with a skimmer, drain them well, and send to the table hot.

A good cough medicine is made of boiling two ounces of flaxseed in one quart of water: add rock candy to sweeten it to your taste. After strain- ing, add also the juice of soveral lemons. This should be taken at night, and if possible itshould be hot when taken.

A delicious filling for a layer cake is made of one cup of stoned raisins and one lemon peeled,chopped together; mix with this half a eup of cold water and one cap of sugar. Beat this well to- gether ; if the cake is well baked,so that there is a crust on top, put the filling in while the eake is quite warm. Be sure to remove the seeds from the lemons.
