The death of 197 ehildren in Sunder- land last month is still fresh in the public memory. By snow avalanches at Mount Ararat in March, 159 people living at the foot of the mountain were destroved. In the same month the crews of the Hull and Yarmouth( Eng.) tishing fleets were drowned to the aum- | ber of 155 persons. By the caving 10 | of the Diamond coal mine, Joliet, lil.,! February 17, 77 miners were sutfocated, By the burning of the steamea “rap-| pler” off Seymour Narrows, Pacitic | Coasi, 7) passengers, mostly Chinese, were drowned, May 4. At the burn- ing of the Newhall House, Milwaukee, | 59 persons lost their lives. On May 18) eyclones in Lllinvis and Wisconsin | killed 54° persons. “January 20 407 people werekilled by powder explo-| sions in a manufactory at Meriden near |! Amsterdam. By asimilar explosion | in Rome, April 6, 40 persons were killed. On Mareh 11 the steamer “Navarre” foundered between Copen- hagen and Leith, with a loss of 46 lives, On April 1, six fishing smacks went down in a gale off Yarmouth, Eng.,with a loss of 40 lives. These are buta few of the 147 disasters of the six months.
