Newfoundiand’s View of the Matter Orrawa, July 31.
Mr. Smith, Deputy Minister of Marine, who has returned from Newfoundland, says that the Government of Newfoundland are not inclined to active measures in regard to the fisheries question. The feeling in the matter there is not the same as in Canada, as American fishermen only go to New- foundland ports for bait and ice, and they fish on the Banks so that the Govern- ment are not inclined to incur the expense of armed cruisers.
A Strict Enforcement Hoped for. Orrawa, July 31. Hon. Mr. Foster, Minister of Marine and Fisheries, says that the Maritime Provinces are unanimous in favor of a strict enforce- ment of the Fisheries Law. He thinks that they are fully satisfied with the efforts of the government in this direction, and hopes that by the aid of the new steamer the fishery laws will be still more stringent- ly enforced.
