evelopment decisions; joined with two other groups to intervene under the federal environmental assessment of a proposed diamond mine; testified before the parliamentary committee on aboriginal affairs regarding proposed petroleum development in Alaska's National Wildlife Refuge; objected to mineral exploration in a proposed northern park east on Inuvik; completed an inventory of ancient forest landscapes in 5,000,000 ha. of Ontario's Lake Temagami region; signed a declaration with Long Point Bird Observatory to become the Canadian partners of BirdLife International and thus lead bird conservation and important bird areas protection nationally; helped to assess the role of Cuban forests in overwintering birds; assisted with the development of the Canadian Landbird Conservation Strategy; hosted a birdathon team in the Baillie Birdathon; wrote The National Parks of Canada (Kevin HcNamee) , produced Biodiversity: a Guidebook for Canadian Business with Industry Canada; published the Nature in Your Back Yard special issue of Nature Canada to help Canadians improve biodiversity in their backyards; created the Ancient Forest Detective program to assist students, naturalists, and youth groups with tools to survey forests for old growth features and to promote their conservation; provided development support and sales for the BirdQuest birding program which is in operation in 560 schools, natural history, scout, and guide groups; produced a colourful travelling display on monarchs; and advocated the resurrection of the Canadian Landmarks to protect natural sites of national significance.

‘BLRND NATURE TRUST SEEKS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: by Dan McAskill

After a decade of unprecedented growth under the extremely capable management of Diane Griffin, its first Executive Director, the Island Nature Trust is seeking a new Executive Director. In June, 1995, the Honourable Catherine Callbeck announced that Diane had been offered and accepted, the position of Deputy Minister of Environmental Resources. While this position will be new to Diane, she has worked at the management level for the provincial governments of both Prince Edward Island and Alberta.

In a time of governments seeking new partnerships, the Premier has selected one of the most capable team builders in Canada to serve as senior civil servant in the difficult portfolio of Environmental Resources. On behalf of the Natural History Society, we wish Diane every success in this new challenge and we hope the Island Nature Trust finds a worthy successor to accept its challenge of taking the Trust through its second decade and into the 21st Century.

Among other things, the Second National Habitat Workshop held in Sackville on August 16 to 19th explored government volunteer relationships as well as natural area management. Forest management, landbird monitoring, riparian zone management, nutrient cycling in the Bay of Fundy, and many other topics were also on the agenda for the approximately 140 attendees.
