— Work is to be begun at once upon the Chiguecte Ship Railway, to the end that is may be opened for next fall's traftic.

—So rapid has been the progress mide in the work of ccmpiling the census re- turns this year under Mr. George Juhn- son’s direction, that in a very few weeks’ time it is expected the entire work will have been completed: Fourteen members of the censvs staff hava received notices that their services wouid not be reijaired after this week,

—The department of agriculture has re- evived copies of the latest imperial order affecting the landing of catile in Great Britain. It provides that no steamer shall carry Canadian cattle to Great Britain which has had United States cattle on board within 21 days of the Canadian cat- tle being shipped.

—According to reports received by the finance department at Ottawa, produce dealers in Great Britain state that the quality of Canadian cheese marketed there last year was considerably above that of other years, although previous qualities had been excellent. The high standing of the Canadian produet isin marked con- trast to the inferior cheese of the United States.

— Mr. Gladstone in the Nineteenth Century reviews the rise and progress of the plattorn since the Gordon Riots in 1780, and aisda deals with the relation of the platform to the press in the political field from the time of the Reform Bill of 1832 He believes the platform has been the stronger influence, but he says ‘let not the press tremble for its prerogatives. The platform, indeed, both displays and generates living energy. It quickens sympathy, besides inerea ing _ia- formation, ani it brings tu bear the whole power of fellowship in a canse. Yet it is in the main an occesional and intermittent power, while the action of the press is con- tinuous and permanent as that of old time himself.”

—From a return brought down to Par- liament last week it appears that 2,626 petitions, with 3C4 808 signatures, have been received in favor of a prohibitory liquor law, and also 11 petitions from societies.
