The President died at 10.35.

After the bulletin was issued at 5.30 this evening the President ecntinued in much the same condition as during the afternoon, his pulse ranging — from 102 to 106 #4with rather increas- ed force and volume. After taking nourishment he fill into a quiet sleep for ebout jthirty five minutes. Before his death, and while asleep, his pulse rose to 120 and was somewhat more feeble. At ten minutes past ten he awoke, and complained of severe pain over the region of the heart, and almost immediately be- came unconscious and ceased to breathe at 10.30.

Previous to his death the only words spoken by the President were that he had @ severe pain in his heart.

It is supposed by the Surgeons that death was caused by a clot of blood forming in the heart.

Dr. Bliss was the first one notified of the Preside:t’s expression of pain, and upon entering the room, at once saw that the end was near.

The members of the family were imme- diately summoned to the bed side. All ar- rived and perfect quiet prevailed.

Mrs. Garfield bore the trying ordeal with great fortitude, and exhibited unprecedent- ed courage. She gave way to no paroxyisms of grief, and after death became evident she quietly withdrew to her own reom,

The death scene was one never to be fergetten. Perfect quiet prevailed, and not a murmur was heard while the Presi- dent was sinking. After death had been pronouneed, the body was properly arrang- ed by Dr. Beyiton.

Mr. Morris, the undertaker, of Long Branch, has charge of the remains. —

WakrEN, Me., Sept. 17. In a fit of jealousy last night, Charles Smith went to the house of his wife’s par- ents, David McRob!ins and wife, and ehot Mrs. MecRobbins and his wife, aged 19, both fatally; and his year and-a-half old sonf killing the jatter icstantly. A Mrs. Metcalf who lived in the bouse and was present, fled, alullet grazing her ear, and taking her twochiidren hid in the woods. Smith went to the police, confessed the crime and surrendered. Cuatcaco, Sept. 17 Unusually cold weather is reported frem Des Moines and other parts of Iowa for several days. Snow fell along the Ruck island road between De Soto, twenty miles west of here, and some points in Nebraska. There is snow two inches in depth at Omaha. The weather is cloudy and very cold, New York, Sept. 17. In a race yesterday at Fulton, N. J.,over a threo-quarter mile course rowed over four times between Courtney and Riley, the latter was capsized by collision with an outside boat and Courtney rowed over the courss, said to bs three miles and 66 feet, im 13 minutes and 52 seconds. The time was remarkable, but high wind aided him materially.

GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND. Lonpon, Sept. 17. The cotton movement has assumed a more important aspect than hitherto. A meeting at Manchester yesterday of manufacturers of North and East Lancashire unanimously favored running only three days weekly ior a month, or during such time as the spin- ners have stopped, provided two-thirds of the looms are willing to adopt that course. The meeting adjourned until Thursday. If the suggestion is carried out agitation will be greatly extended and matters will become much more serious for the Liver- pool cotton brokers. Lonpon, Sept. 17. The ‘* Times’” Dublin report says : The drift of all the speeches at the Land League convention was that the Land League should not think of accepting the Land Act as a final settlement.
