As soon as it was suffiziently light, we commenced attack upon the batteries defending the city.

This attack la-ted about three hours and resulted in much damage to the batteries and incidentally to portion of city adjacent ' to the batteries.

New York, May 13.—A Washington special to the Commercial Advertiser says that the Navy Department has been in- formed that while the French liner La- Fayette wasin Havana Harbor, ehe un- loaded 80 French pieces of artillery and a large amount of supplies, Should this prove true, it will raiee a question with France wkich will be of very grave import- ance and doubtless result in the demand that France make immediate apology.
