The followio’ letter. giving a description of the manner in which the steamship North American was lost, is published in the London. C. W.. Free Press:—

“ As [we left Riviera du Loup on Saturday eve— ning. Jib. 10th. a heavy rain crime on. and contin- ued a greater “rt of the night. On the morning ot Sande a thick fog prevailed. but as the moon sd~ van the weather again cleared up. After dinner the sun shone out very bright'y. and the hurricane deck was thronged by promenaders. who greatly ad- mired the grand and Imposing coastal scenery. Towards evening dense fog again set in. and speed was slackcned. while the fog horn was blown at in- tervals. ‘I‘here began to be a slight swell. and the company at tea was noticeably reduced. none of the ladies appearing. The fog still continued. and after ten most of the passengers retired to their state- rooms. while a few remained in the saloon. and other re ired on deck to watch the progress of events.
