Asylum Management.

Sir,—The Patriot ef yesterday demands the appointment of another official at the Asylum for the Insane, who shall be a sort of deputy for Dr. Blanchard. I trust the trustees of that institution will not be led into deing anything of this kind. There are, | believe, quite enough officials there. The trustees should see to it that those already there should perform their duties Sei} tniicrais TS much more likely to crear confusion than to premote-etticiency. -It , would seem trom the infermation given in the Examiner that certain duties are as- signed each employee. This isrighi. The Manson outrage is greatly te be regretted, and the perpetrators of it should be severe- ly punished; but the staff is, | think, suffti- ciently large, and, 1 trust, also quite com- petent to give reasonable assurances against the repetition of scenes Jike that which took place on the 20th of May. All will admit that the care of 100 lunatics involves a great responsibility, and while the public will not condone any hardships, muel less cruelty, to the unfortunate and defenceless, they will not, at the same time, justify un- reasoning and indiscrimate censure of officials.

Ch’town, June 25, 1880.

A despatch from Bett’s Cove, Nfid., states that the schooner * R. J. Hart,” from St. John’s to Labrador, with fishing supplies, and a large number of people of both sexes, was crushed by ice on Tuesday night last, 22 miles east south- east of St. John’s. All hands were res- cued and landed at La Scie, onthe French shore. ‘The women and children were almost naked. Vessels have been seut to convey them to this port. The crew saved nothing, barely escaping with their lives.

A commission has, it is understood, been appointed to euquire into-the work- ing of mills, factories and workshops throughout the Dominion, in connection with the bill introduced last session by Dr. Bergin, of Cornwall. The duties of the commission, which is composed of Mr. Lukes of Toronto, and Mr. Blakesby of Guelph, will be to ascertain how many children are employed at ten years of age and between ten and fourteen, the hours of labor, the ventilation of build- ings in which they work, the means of escape frona fire, etc.

Iu the jail in Toronto on Tuesday last, while the guard was giving one Gand- raux an injection of morphine, Max Levi, a man who tried to shoot his wile and commit suicide, being in the same ward, noted the proceeding as well as the return of the bottle to the guard’s pocket. Levi, watching his opportunity, snatched the bottle and swallowed the morphiue., Levi was driveu to the hospital, and the usual remedies eflectually applied.

Their casks put on end would make about 2400 pillars as high as St. Peter's at Rome, which is 450 feet high. Babylon was 3 square of fifteen ’miles on the side, these casks would more than surround the walls three times.

They pay over $900,000 a year to Railways and Canals for carraiage; they use over 2,000,000 bushels of barley, and 3,800,000 tbs cf hops. The land required for the pro- 67,000 acres at SU vusnels per ‘der’. ~baef consume about 50,000 tons of coal. They pay the Government, as malt tax, per year, avout $1,500,000. In malting, they use during the season about 60,000 busliels per week, and still have to buy from other maltsters about 20,- 000 quarters er 160,000 bushels. The pre- sent Mr. Bass was born in 1799 and edu- cated at the Burton Grammar School... He has held a seat in Parliament for Derby. since 1847, and is a Deputy Lieuter ant for the counties of Derby and Stafford. In Parliament he is well known as an atten- tive member and a thoroughly consistent: Liberal.
