No Analogy.
Tuzes is no analogy between the case mentioned by the Patrict and the case of our Dominion officials. The British Par- liament may, of course, make regulations in reepoct to the conduct of British fh cirls. The Dominiva Parliament m«y do the same in reepect to Dominion offic als. If the Dominion Parliament were to enact that Domiaion officials, hereafter to be appointed, shall not possess the franchise or take any part in pol.tics, it would be acting within its right. More than that, the offizials of the future would have no cause to complain, for their less of franchise would be conditional upon their acceptance of office. But such an enactment would be widely differeut from that which is proposed by the Peters Combination. It is proposed by Mr. Peters to take way from the Dominion officials + right which they already possess, in «pen and fiagrant violation of the principle ‘*Oace a voter always a voter.” It is proposed to deprive the Dominion officiale of a privilege which they hold and have «x -rcised. it is pro- posed to rob them of one of their dearest eivil rights. By whom ia this outrage to be perpetrated? Not by the Dominion Parliament, which bas the right to regulate the conduct of D>minion officials, but by the Provincial Legislature, which hve over them no control at all! Me Peters has, in his private cspacity, a@ much right to impose restrictions upon the actions of the the Lieutenant Governor or the Administrator of the Government, as he has, in his public capacity, to impose restrictions upon the actions of the public servants of the Dominion of Canada. The rascslity of the proposed confiscation will be the more clearly seen by reversing the positions. Buppose that the Dominion Parliament were to enact that all the Provincial officials in all the Provinces of Canada should be dis- franchised, — suppose that Sir Oliver Mowat, Mr. Bisir, Me. Fielding and oll the other Provincial Premiers aad all their aubordinace officials were to be robbed of all their votes by an sect of the Dominion Parliament, would not Mr. Peters be one of the fret to “ery havoc and let slip the dogs of war”-—would not the while country exclaim against the act of spoliation and robbery which had been committed ? Yot, it will be admitted, the Dominion Perliament bes a¢ much right to dis- franchise Provincial officials as the Pro- Legislature has to disfranchise Dominion officials.

Tux Pioneer says that “Ferguson is again to the front.” Not content with “running” the Opposition in the Lagisla- ture, promoting and conducting ll the indignation meetings held throughout the country, editing Tae Examinen, keeping an eye upon the Stock Farm, managing his own business, and continuslly badgering Premier Petors, Mr. Ferguson has, sccord- ing te the Pioneer, taken the esteemed Superintendent of the P. E Island Riil- way by the throat—literally ‘comp siled Unsworth to allow him to canvass the employes.” More than that, ‘* Ferguson again approaches Unsworth and compels

But we incline to the epinion that the Pioneer does him too much honor. What are the facta? Mr. Peters and hia fellow confiscators contend- ed that the railway mea and other Govern- ment officials wanted to be disfranchised, —

But che Pioneer puts too sevete a etrain upon the credulity of the people when it asks them to believe that he is able to compel the Dominion officials to do that agsinst which “ their nature must have revolted.” The petition and protest of the officials is the most natural as it ia the most proper thing in the world—and the Pioneer's declaration that Mr. Ferguson compelled them to sigo it is merely insulting. The Lead- er of the Opposition acted as Vice Chair- man. Honorable gentlemen were not ranged opposite and against each other as usus!; but the strongest opponents in the Legislature were seated close toge! her and occupied in mucually pleasing c nversa’ton, while they partook of the choicest viands— including strawberries and cream—that could be piovured by Mine Host of the Hotel Davies. To see theeditorof the Patriot sested in the midst of the best and strongest L beral-Coneervatives in the country, and apparently enj ying it, one would almoat be persuaded that Millenia! Day bad dawn- ed. Great, indeed, must be the bon homie of Judge McLaod, seeing that the desire to de honor to him could be prodactive of such results. A Dangerous Derilict. | Boston, April 4.
Captain Lampe, of the steamer George Dumois, from Gibraltar, reports that on March 28th, in lat 26 north, lon. 74 west, he passed the wreck of a three masted schooner, her decks painted black, apparent- ly 300 tons register, directly in the track of vessels and a dangerous obstruction to nav- igation.
Fatal Fire. Vienna, April 4, Ninety houses in Klein, Pocahiarn, on the Diuube, were burned yesterday. Fifteen
dead bodies were removed from the ruins and twelve more are known to be under the ashes.
Conservative Nemination.
Reoavp, April 4. At the Conservative Convention here yesterday, J. A. Chevrier was nominated to contest Vaudreuil for the House of Com- mons.

unate that when, as last night, something out cof the ordinary and of merit is presented, our people do not turn out

The goodly audience which istened with del ght to the two can tutas performed by Miss MRussl.'s pupils, enjoyed an evening of pleasure and = profi Remembering that the performers were | vearly all littie Misses or children, and that the class of music was of no mean order, the greatest praise must ba de-| servedly given to all. No one was conspic vous for her fxults. All gave evidence ot careful training, and many excelled. = Iu the **Garden of Singing Flowers,” Mr. J. Lewis, as the map in the moon, carried off the palm ia his happy lecal hits, and the pretty, melodious cantata was brought to a close by a chorus, during the stinging of which colured hghts were threwn upon the performers with good effect. Miss Enid McLean was the next attraction, and in her recitation held the audience in rapt attention and evuked a hearty demonstra- tion of favor. The second part of the pro- gramme consisted of “*The Dress Re- hearsal," performed for the first time here and performed well.” Miss Russell acted the part of the olden time school principal with becoming dignity and was ably sup ported by Miss Winnie Cotton as a teacher of elucution (who had once performed the role of Juliet) by Miss Annie Hyndman, as French governess, and by the Misses Earle and Miss Stewart who played their] parts of Cindrella and her sisters with mach spirit and vigor. Mies Corrie Hall as Fairy God Mother and Miss Beatrice Hall as the Prince were fo! excelled by their companions in the perform- ance of their parts, while the former sang her principal song in a sweet voice with graceful- ness. Miss Ansie Hyndman’s song ‘What Is Love” was undoubtedly the gem of the piece, and was, of course, encored by the apprecietive audience, who were alzao much pleased with the excellent animated trie of the disputing sisters. Sarah Ann enlivened matters by her trequent allusions to things edib’e, and the whole play sparkled with wit and amusing situations throughout. Everything went smoothly and the evening was an emphatic success. Mr. Karle, it is needless to say, was master of the situation at the piano, and with Miss Russel shares fulleat praise for the credit- able production of last evening. If there was one fault to be found it was that the cislogue was cot always «s well beard as couid have been desired; but this would appear to be as mach the feult of the acoustics of the place as of ths performers. Next tiwe, ladies, speak more deliberately and louder, for your repue tation is now secured, aod your next appeat- ance in public will be hailed with delight.
