The Question of the Future.

first lecture of the winter course before the Y. M. C. A. was delivered last evening by the Rev, James Carruthers. The subject was the * Building of our own monuments; a question of the Future.” When, asked the Rev. lecturer, the green gress grows over our gravea and other men waik the streets, conduct the business, and guide the helm of State, will they remem- ber us? Andif so, how! All men desire to be remembered. This desire takes dif- ferent forms as you pass through different grades of society. We find men perform- ing great deeds,—for what purpose? Because they love to perform them? Tras. But almost in all cases the actor wants to win aname. To this end men have found-

celebrate their name and make their fame eternal. Just here the lecturor called to mind how very few names there are upon the pages of history that really stand out in living characiers, that are monuments of true glory and greatness. The lectures gave as his reason that perhaps the verdict lag more quiet and dis-

tides, Themistocles, Phocian and Pericles: such philosophers as Pythagoras, Socrates, Eaclid, Plato and Aristotle; poets such as Pindar, Enripides, s »phocles and Aristop- hanes ; historians such as Zenphon, aud Herodotus, and orators anch as Dewos- thenes Athenian greatness, however, went down — morally, because morality grew lax, marriege was unfashionable and was avoided; physically, because of luxury; and socially because of both immorality and luxury.
The locturer then discussed the building oi these monuments in the physical and moral world. The second part of the lecture showed how we could remedy present defects strengthen prerent weaknes:es, and develop the true and the good. After a fuller dose than usual of that nauseating self-adulation, so common to Provincial speakers when speaking of their ‘‘Native Province,” a gentleman at Senator Howlan’s banquet remarked that, In his opinion Swhatever other great and noble qualities our people were possessed of they had beyond doubt the merit of being the most ‘‘patient people on the face of the globe.” Truthfyl words most _ timely spoken, becoming more painfully true hourly.
Thirteen years ago we stamped out with careless easy hand the ‘‘parva sub ingenti,” which on our own coin mottoed on one side tealty to the British Crown and the ‘‘self government and free trade,” which on the other showed the lines that fealty mean’ to walk in; and stepped beyond the shade of the mother tree which had shel- tered us through a hundred years of inde- pendent self-government, cajoled so to do most sweetly by the words ‘‘efficient steam communication between the Island avd the Mainland, winter and summer.”
Since then the boy has grown into the man ; and words once bright with promise are now like the eatch-words of asong used by the politician as the songster to strike the ear. But of fulfilment there is naught. We have, indeed, grown so patient under thia, and shown ourselves so docile, that our Foster Mother every once in a while stops little extras she trained our petience with ; now an official, useful but too costiy for so small a place, is removed ; now a mail train, too great a luxury for ao much docility, is stopped. yet have received no reward—excepi, perhaps, what wo deserved. Did we hear a Whisper that the end was near at hand; and that a united people, bending the knee to no political prophet, were about to de- mand fulfilment of the terms of union, with the distinct alternative that unless fulfilled we return ‘*Self Government and Free Trade,” never again to deface our Island coin with the tawdry trappings of a new nationality? Would that this whisper ware like arnshing mighty wind, reaching every ear and rousing the people from their a8omn vNence.,

The thanksgiving services held the other day in gratitude for our further deliverance from the pestilence of smallpox, brought forcibly before us how difficult it is for most men to offer up in public a sensible, suitable prayer. We met to give thanks, We heard our good men praised without stint ; our conduct as citizens extolled ; of the fearful danger we were in; of the heavy visitation in other less favored places. Add to thig the oft-repeated and in {many cases seline adulation of Almighty God, and you have what we heard. Tho simple thanksgiving of humble, thankful men, alone was wanting. Why is this? Can the Preacher not forget himself in Prayer, or has he to pander toa vitiated taste to gain a hearing. To the thinking man all rhapsody ia out of place in prayer. ‘* God be merciful to me a sinner,” waa one of the eimplest, yet one of the most poworfui prayersever uttered God may be touched with a feeling of our infirmities, but hardly by our eloquence.

The Fisheries Question.
Wasuinoton, Jan, 18,
In the Senate to-day, Senator Frye, of Maine, introduced the following :
Whereas, The President has recommended Mongress t» provide for a Commission to settle and adjast the Fisheries Question ;
And Whereas. The Fisheries Question has been settled for ten years past under the ‘Treaty of Washington, ata cost of five and a half millions of dollars in money and the re- mission of six millions of dollara duties in that period ;
And Whereas, That Treaty had resulted in an increase of 500 vessels and 10,000 seamen to the Canadian tishing ficets, with a correspond-
ing decrewe in the fishing flrets of the United States Therefore be it Resolved. That, in ‘the
opinion of the Senate a commission clothed with powers referred to ought not to be pro- vided for by Congress.
In the discussion that followed, Edmunds, Hoar and Frye argued in favor of the resolutions, while Morgan, of Ala- bama, expressed astonishment that the ter- mination of the Fishery Treaty had not worked to the advantage of the American fishermen.

Fatal Fire
Lonpon, Jan. 18. Distressing news has just been received of the burning of an enormous haystack at Lanberg, Bavaria, which has been used during cold weather for the shelter of vagrants. Twenty dead bodies have already been taken from the ruins,and it is thoucht

Frozen to Death.

One night last week Stephen Kelly, a section man on the Northern and* Western Railway, while walking between Doaktown and Blackville, was frozen to death. His lifeless body was found by A. W. Stratton, of Fredericton.
