Something similar happened to each of his followers. A moment of confusion man and beast in furious action, clang ol blows, splintering of wood, and battle-cries, then two results: the Christians were repulsed, aud that before the second infidel rank had been reached; and while they were in amongst the long spears, fencing and striking, clear above the meledy of the melee they heard a shout, Al-a-lala/ Al-a-lala! Alvarado looked that way; looked through the yellow shafts and brazen points. Brief time had he, yet he beheld and recognized the opposing leader. Behind the kneeling ranks he stood, without trappings, without a shield even; a maquahuiti, edged with flint, sharp as glass, hard as steel, was his only weapon; behind him appeared an irregular mass of probably half a thousand men, unarmed and almost naked. Even as the good captain looked the horde sprang forward, and by pressing between the files of spearmen, or leaping panther-iike over their shoulders, gained the front. There they rushed upon the horsemen, entangled amidst the spears, to capture not to slay them, for, by the Aztec code ef honor, the measure of a warriors greatness was the num- ber of prisoners he brought out of battle, a present to the gods, not the number of foe- men heslew. Lhe rush was like that ef wolves upon a herd of deer. First to encoun- ter a Christian was the chief. The exehange of blows was incredibly quick. The horse reared, plunged blindly, then rolled upon the ground—the flinty maquahuistl, surer than the axe, had broken its leg. A cry sharpened by mortal terror, a Spanish ery for help in the Methers name. Christians and infidels looked that way, and from the latter burst a jubiiant yell:

The successful leader stooped, and wreached the shield from the falling man; then he swung the maquahuitl twice, and brought it down on the mailed head of the horse; the weapon broke in pieees; the steed lay still forever.
Now, Alvarado was not the man to let the ery of a comrade zo unheeded.
** Turn gentlemen ! one of us is down; hear ye not the name of Christ and the Mother? To the rescue! Charge! Christo y San- tiago /”
Forward the brave men epurred; the spears closed around them as before, while the un- armed foe, encouraged by the ‘tzin’s achieve- ment, redoubled their efforts to drag them from their saddles. In disregard of blows, given fast as skilled hands could rise and fall, some flung themselves upon the legs and necks of the horses, where they seemed to cling after the axe had spattered théir brains or the hoofs crushed their bones; some caught the bridle reins and hung to them full weight; others strugzled with the riders directly, haul- ing at them, leaping behind them, catching sword-arm aad shield; and so great did the peril finally grow that the Christians were forced to give up the rescue the better to take care of themselves,

What a Mistake!
One half of all the people in this country have been cr are now aillicted with catarrh or bronchitis. No doubt many of them have tried every blood purifier they have seen, with the erroneous idea that catarrh is a con- stitutional disease of the blood. Why, a greater mistake was bever made! Stop for a moment and ask any reputable physician what common catarrh is, or bronchitis (which is a catarrh in the bronchial tubes), and what causes it, and the answercan only be this: “Its an irritation or inflammation of the mocus membrane of the nose and throat, caused by neglected colds, damp, pifercing, irritable winds, foreign matter in the air, which is poisonous to some persons and not to ethers; just as the bites of a certain insect is a poisoned torture to some and no un- pleasant affect to others.” The reason for this is found ip the different structure of the outer skin and its counterpart which lines all the inner organs of our bodies. Some people have chapped hands and chillblains and others are never so afflicted because of the peculiar structure of the skin of different individuals. It is not blood purifiers you want, but pood good wholesome food, the plainer the better; then ‘“‘keep your feet dry and warm, your head cool, and bowels open,” and use an ex- ternal application (Johnson’s Anodyne Lini- ment is the best we know) to allay the in- flammation, cleanse the surface, heal the sores, and your catarrh will disappear like magic; we do not say never to return, because you may cure a severe cold and in three months catch another equally bad; so with catarrh and bronchial troubles, exposure may bring it on again. We learned more about treating catarrh from a wrapper around a bottle of Johnson's Anodyne Liniment than we ever knew. Certainly this good old medi- cine deserves to be called ‘‘A universal family remedy.” It will pay youto send to IL. 8.
