The Prince Edward Island Hos- pital School for Nurses was org- united in 1890. On November 24. i590, Miss Sheraton, a graduate q; the City Hospital, of St. John New Brunswick. was engaged to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Miss MacDonald,

.Matron of the PEI. Hospital. Miss Sheraton was highly recom- ‘ mended by the medical staff of the St. John Hospital. _

By her suggestion several im- provements were introduced. add- ing to the efficiency of the in- stitution. Among other thin‘ she opened a class for women's in- struction and training. in nursing. The hospital staff then numbered eighteen. including domestics. This movement had the entire nppfOvﬂl of the medical staff who had long felt the want of trained nurses in this community. The course of training at that time extended over two full years, and included instruction from text books and manuals of nurs- ing, daily drill on the wards. op- crating-rccln and other depart- ulcnis by the Matron, and lect- ures and demonstrations by the medical and surgical staff.

The candidates were received on one months probation. In 1893, Mi-s Sara J. Arthur lliid Miss Elia Tynan graduated from the Prince Edward Island Hospital School for Nurses, the first nurses to graduate in Prince Edward Is- land. -

The Sick Room - Ventilation. Temperature, Disinfectants and Deodoriscrs. Contagious Diseases Inflammation - Suppuration, Septicaernia, Pyaemia and Gan- grene. etc., Principles of Antisep- tic Surgery. — Four lectures.

Sarah Jean Arthur.‘ born _ at Hazel Grove, when a girl of nine- teen read an editorial in an issue of The Guardian for the year i690 stating that "young women of the higher 'type and of super- ior education" were needed to take up the profession of nursing in the new hospital at Charlotte- town. In December she entered the training school. In two years she had her diploma and became the first graduate of the first school of nursing in the Province. She gave her services for the next year to the school free as did her only classmate, Miss-Ella

Tynan.

Miss’ Arthur died in Summer- slde in 1945.
