Mrs. Cuanves Tracey, of New York, on Monday last gave birth to a healthy child that weighs eleven ounces, and is but six inches long. The baby’s body could be circled by a fourteen year old child’s thumb and fingers. lta head is perfectly formed and is about os size of a crab apple. Its mouth is so — that it is unable to partake of nataral nourish- ment, and a small nipple, the size of a straw, attached to a small glass bottle, does duty in that particular.

Rebels Suffering from Famine. Carro, Dee, 28. The Mudir of Dongola telegraphs that a hative who left Khartoum a fortnight ago has arrived at Dongola. A native who spent four days inspecting the Madhi’s position, reports that the rebels are suffer- ing severely from famine, that many bodies are strewed about the country anburied, and the rebels discouraged bv General Gordon's repeated attacks. He repeats the report that a large number of the Madhi’s regulars have joined Gordon.

A Breach ot Neutrality. Lonpon, Dee. 28. Marquis Tsing has warned Earl Granville that the sale to France of several! English vessels now trading between England and the Cape of Good Hope, for transport- ing French troops to China, is a breach of neutrality. The English Government has advised the owners of the vessels that no evasion of the foreign enlistment act will be permitted. The Expedition ready to March. Kortt, Dec. 27. The English expedition is about to start. It will consist of 900 infantry, and 1500 cavalry, with six screw guns, and 1800 camels. The ninth huasars will start on Monday to ascead the Nile on the west bank to act as scouts.

It is reported that the German flag has been hoisted over New Ireland, New Bri- tain, the Admiralty Islands, and portions vf the northern coast of New Guinea.

Mr. Charles Hanington, of Shediac, is putting in men and teams to cut 5,000,000 feet of spruce and hemlock this winter, the greater part on the Cucagne and Shediac rivers.

Kir Richard Temple has written a letter of thanks to the Canadian Pacific Railway Company warmly expressing the satisfac- tien of the members of the B. A. A. 58. at their treatment on their trip to the Rockies.

The new Pacific Railway Bridge over the St. Lawrence at Lachine is to cost two and a half million dollars. The principal spans will be 408 feet long. Two others will be 270 and 242 feet long The total length of the bridge will be 3,300 feet.

Dr. Howard, jr., of Montreal, fhas suc ceeded in securing by examir ation the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, This is the most coveted surgical diploma in the world, and Dr. Howard, jr., is the first native Canadian who has obtained it.
