MADRID, Jan. 9—(A.P.)—A bat- tle between Communists and a large force of civil guards was under way tonight at the village of Bugarra ' the Province of Valencia.

HALIFAX, Jan. lL-Aclvocacy of a national transportation policy for Canada was expressed unanimously today by newspapermen of the Mar- itime Provinces, gathered for the annual meeting of the Maritime division of the Canadian Press, pre- sided over by Senator W. H. Den- nis of the Halifax Herald.

At the completion of the meet- ingfs business, a resolution was passed “that the Maritime division of the Canadian Press advocates the adoption of a Canadian Na- tional policy designed to ensure the greatest possible use of Canadian ports and Canadian transportation routes in the handling of all ocean- borne traffic exported or imported by Canadians."

FREDERICTON, N. B., Jan. 9.- With another week gone by without snow, lumber operators in the cen- tral section of New Brunswick are anticipating a general lay-off in the next fe\v days, because of there be- ing insufficient snow for hauling.

Operators who had considerable yardlllg to do are spinning this phase of the work out in order to keep the crews in the woods until the needed-snow arrives. Some of the lumbering firms will keep their men at work the rest of the week. There are several operators, how- ever, who have about wound up the ysrdlng and in another day or so will have to take their workers out of the woods.
