Mr. James D. MicDonAa.p, the efficient and gentlemanly manager of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co’s. Store, has been promo- ted by the Company to the Superintendency of their principal Store, which is situated on the cor. of Bleecker and Broadway, sts. New York. Mr. McDonald carries with him the well deserved esteem of many of our best citizens, for notwithstanding the short time he has been among us, he was well known and universally liked. We wish him success in hif new sphere.

The above from a Poughkeepsie, N. Y. news paper, is in reference to the success of a young Islander —James D. McDonald, son of the late Captain Roderick McDonald of Souris. The House which he now superintends, is the principal of one hundred stores run by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., of the United States. We join with many others in wishing him every success.

On returning rfoim the country, we find that, though Professor Caven, editor of the Herald, has not offered any apology for the msults he lately heaped upon a church con- gregations and upon persons and institutions in the community of which he is a servant, he has been careful not to repeat them. This practical evidence that we have taught the Professor a lesson is gratifyimg; and we venture to pre. dict that the //era/d will be less scurrilously personal in future. At for the Herald's ref- erence to the Manager and Kditor of this paper, it brings to mind an event on the school-ground many years ago A quarrelsome fellow, known as the ‘ bully of the school” had received the drubbing his conduct deserved. When running away, with his coat in his hand, he turned, at a safe dis- tance,and made use of language almost identi- cal with that used by the Prefessor on this occasion. We have to thank the Professor for this, not wunpleasing, reminiscence of school-time triumph.

St. Paul’s Church Association.

The meeting of this Association last evening was a very successful one. A large audience gathered to hear a paper read by Dr. Leeming on ‘‘ The intreduction of Christianity into Britain,” in which proof after proof was given of the existenoe of a Christian Church in England, dating back to Apostolic times, and probably planted there by the Apostie Paul ; but, if not by him, then by missionaries sent by him. Dr. Leeming showed that this Church had its organisation coiaplete down to the time that Augustine was sent from Rome, and only after its almost entire destruction by the Saxons was it absorbed by the Church of Rome.

A discussion followed, in whieh Revs. FitzGerald, Read and Osbore, and Messrs. Palmer, Davis, Warburton, Dixon, Welsh and Brecken took part; and it was of such an interesting character that, although the meeting was extencled half-an-hour beyond the usual time, it was unanimously decided to adjourn the discussion until the next meeting night.

An occasional contributor reports :— There was a crowded house last evening. Dr. Leeming’s paper was most interesting, and displayed great research and learning. The Welsh Triads, Old Gildas, the Vener- able Bede, Theodolet, Tacitus and a host of other authorities ef equal merit were cited to show that Christianity in the first and second centuries had a streng foothold in Britain, and was planted there in Apos- tolic times, if not by the Apostles them- selves ; so that when Gregory sent Augus- tine from Rome ia A. D. 600 to teach Christianity to the Saxons, he found there an independent Church in_ Britain, founded in Apostolic times, and Augustine had Gregory’s orders not to Church or the British bishops, whe laboured in the West among

the British Christians. A spirited discus- sion followed, and modern instances were freely quoted, but not much weight was at- | tached to the opinions in the face of the’ old authorities. The subject, however, | was very well debated, and it was found | that even after an extended half-hour was. given to debate, that the topic was not nearly exhausted, and the meeting was ad- journed until next Friday evening, to fin- ish the debate, wien an apportunity will be afforded all members of hearing and being heard. Supreme Court. JANUARY, 23. The (Jueen vs. William Wheeler. This was a prosecution for stealihg a wagon and set of harness from the premises of Theodore Ab- bott, Union Road, The facts as they appear- ed fremthe evidence were: On the 25th of July last, Abbott's out-buildings were set on fire by some unknown person, and almost to- tally desireyed. On searching through the remains of the buildings, no trace of a wagen which had been in one of them-—could be found. his caused Abbott’s suspicions to be aroused and, on examining the road, he dis- covered fresh wagon tracks. These tracks were followed by a man named Mallet, and resulted in finding the stolen wagon and set-of harness, which he recognized as belonging to Abbott, on. board the steamer ‘‘St. Law reuce,’ at Summerside, and in possession of the prisoners Wheeler was then arrest- ed and, after a preliminary examination be- fore Mossrs. DesBrisay and acgowan, was ccmmitted for trial. While in jail he tcoka man named Horne, who was confined in the same cell with him, into his confidenve and eonfessed to taking the wagon and harness. After this confession he and Horne fell out, and Horne forthwith turned Turk, put himself in communication with the authorit'es and came forward at the trial and proved the confesssion. There were other circumstances against the prisoner but the general opinion is that had it not been for his outburst of confidence his counsel would have succeeded in having him acquitted. The Judge in summing up the evidence charged strongly against the prisoner; and the Jury after an hour’s absence found him ‘‘guilty.” The Attorney General for the Crown. Mr. E. J. Hodgson, Q. C., for the prisoner.
