Its sole ob- ject was “to encourage the wider circuls-tion of the stfiptmes with- out note or comment." Its first foreign translation was for Can- Bdfl. a. Mohawk-Engl ah Gospel of St. John, translated by Captljn Norton. chief of the Six-Nation Indians in Upper Canada.

As early as 18M. in Ptctou. N-S.. a society was formed and in the same year two hundred ‘Pests- ments ivere gven as a grunt to l the people of Nova Scot-la.

Quickly societies sprang up 1n Nova. Bootis. Quebec, Niugera, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Is- land, Saint John. N.B., and Mont- real. In 1863 Upper Canada sent an Lgent to vist Vancouver Is- land. who formed branches in Victoria and Nanimo, and also in New Westminster.

In I904. the Centenary year o! the perent society, 1t was decided that the auxiliaries throughout Canada should federatc and form the Canadian Bible Society. The first constitution of the Canadian Bble Society. auxil ary to the Brit sh and Foreign Bible was 5.1)- proved in 1905. In 1929 ‘it was ap- proved that the name oi the So- ciety be changed to "Tihe British and Foreign Bible Society in Clin- ada and Newfoundland."
