THE NEW HEROISM. Tue lecture-rocm of Zion Church was last evening wel] fil'ed to hear Rev. Al x ander Geggie, of Truro, lecture on “The New Heroism.” The lecture was eloquent- ly and forcibly delivered, and was calculated to impress upon the minds of his hearers very high ideale of true manhood, Such lectures as that of Jast evening are likely to do an infinite amount of good to the minds of young men and women in establishing strong principles of conduct. The modern Scoteh preacher and novelist is evidently to become a powerful force for good in the immediate future. The lecturer asserted thatthe lack of individual heroism in the eighteenth cen- tury, and the abundance of it in the nine teenth, was the outcome of the scepticism of the former century compared with the deeper realization of Christian principles of action in the nineteenth flowing ip channels of philantrophy. At the close of his tecture Kev. Mr. Geggie was tendered a hearty vote of thanke ———oeooeoooe

Hender- son in olden times did all the work, and thus clearly proved that it can be done by one man. If, therefore, the work is not being done, the fault must le with the prosecutor and the temperance people who are expected to assist him. But there wes no motion before the Council to dismiss Warren and appoint Matthews in his place. On the contrary, the motion made by Councillor Horne and seconded by Councillor Hooper in no sense interfered wtth Warren, and the intention was to have both undercity pay. Qn this ground aloue Mayor Dawson’s action was proper, and for it he deserves the thanks of the citizens. The attacks of the Guardian and the Patriot can in no way detract from the credit that is due him. He was at- tacked before by both those papers and the result was his re-election by a majority unprec edented in Charlottetown. That was the answer of the bone and sinew o{ the city to their attacks before, and the chances are that next time no one will be

found to oppose him in case he asks re- election.

Six,—lIn uesday’s issue of the Patriot, I notice an article stating that there were no applications for the position as Engine- er ov the steamer Petrel. I wonder wher: the Patriot received the information ? Was it from the Hon. Donald Farquaharson or some of the sharebolders of the “ Ccila ”? But no matter where the information came from, I wisn to say that I koow there w-re several applications for the position and that they were acknowledged by the Hon. L. H. Davies some six weeks before Mr. Dunn arrived here. Why, theo, doea the Patriot make such a statement? I defy the Editor of the Patriot or any other person to poe that there were no appli- cations for the position of Engineer. How- ever, the wheel is coming around and _ it will be “our turn next” to show some of these so-called Liberals that the men who support them, are not quite so stupid as they might wieh, and that they may here- after get their support where they get their good steady men. It may be just possible that the shareholders in the Coila, apprec-

ate their Engineer being paid by the Government, rather than out of their pockets.
