Exams to become compulsory?

As the semester’s end draws near and final exams fast approach, the question m05t asked among students is “How many exams do you have to write?”

The answers ,range from “None” to “Six”. Could this question be eliminated by compulsory final exams?

Professor J. J. Revell, Director of the School of Business Administration,

.says that, “Asa general rule.

every student should be re- quired to write examslon the subject matter for which he ask the University to give him credit.” Mr. Revell

feels there

,should be some University

policy on the question of final exams, since “any good university will have some policy on this question.” He says, furthermore, that one cannot let the individual

departments set their own standards on this matter, for

students do not gain depart-'

mental credits, but university credits.

On the other hand, Political Studies Chairman Gary Webster is totally opposed to legislated final exams. He feels compulsory finals “validate the academic freedom of professors to choose appropriate evalu- ation.”

He also suggests that it should be left up to the in— dividual departments as to whether they want finals or not. After all, he wonders, “We’re not ten year-olds, where do people who make these decisions think they get their authority? ’ ’

The reason behind Webster’s opposition is that he feels exams are being used more as a regulatory device than a learning ex-

perience, and that skil acquired “cramming” fl exams will very seldom l used in the real world. I~j also feels that professor lack of time to mark exam results in what he cal “Mickey Mouse exams”. One of the main'argi ments for compulsory fina is that, in the c0urses witi out exams, studentstendi
