General Gordon was the only indivi- dual in the 5, itish nation. Every other man can be more or less classified, and will have leanings more or less toward one leader or another. Gordon’s diary isa sort of fire-work show, sputtering out sparks on all sides equally, astonishing everybody, pleas- ing nobody. Gordon appears in it,how- ever, in a less inconsequent light than in his epigrammatic proclamations and despatches. He had a clear policy and one which accords with all the broken flashes that have escaped trom him—a policy which will be more generally consented to know that the mischief is done that it could have been before. His opinion was that England’s hoyor required the release of the helpless Egyptian garrisons, seeing that Eng- laud was, to some extent, responsible for their being in the fix they were in. This he would have done with a few hundred men, and without artillery, which he declared to have been the bane of all the Soudan campaigns, For per- manent policy he would have handed the country over to Turkey, and, we presume, governed it in the name of the Turks. In other words, he would have
