CANADIAN PIRATES.

They Infest the Straits of Belle Isle and Little Plunder E capes Them.

Ta no other part of the world, per- haps, is there such a daring gang ef pirates as that which iniests the straits of Belle Isle, the narrow passage north of Newfoundland, by which Steaimeships in the summer months reach the Gulf of St. Lawrence fiem IKurope. Some of them live a gool part Of the year On Belle Isle itself, but others come from Newfoundland, Labrador, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, ostensibly to engage in the tisheries, but in real- ity on the lookout for what they can loot and s‘eal from ships in distress,

here at Ieast three or four Wrecks every yecér in the vicinity of Belle Isle, and sometimes a great iroa Steumship breaks up or runs aground there. This is a rich hervest for the pirates. They swarm about the wreck and help themselves to ey erything that they can lay hands on. The captains and crews of such ships in distress have usually all they can do to save theiy lives from this treacherous coast, Without concerning themselves with the fate of their cargoes. Should they venture to remonstrate with these highwaymen of the sea for the free- dom with which they help themselves to other people’s property, they would be laughed at for their pains, as was the captain of the wrecked steamship Mexico, a few days ago. Captain Daly has just arrived from the scene of the wreck of his ship, with the most start- ling description of his experiences with the pirates,

concealed on board. The woman pro- tesied that there was nothing what- ever belonging to him. He insisted

upon 4 search, and found nailed to the bulkhead the portrait of his wife and children which had been taken from his cabin. Continuing the search he found a small h:.tch battened down, and upon opening it discovered thir- teen bugs of clothing belonging to his stupwrecked _ seilors. Shipping men feel that it is an outrage upon foreign as well as Canadian shipping for such a gang of pirates to be permitted at large in Canadian waters to prey upon the commerce of the world, and wonder that justice was not meted out to them long ago. Thus far, no attempt what- ever has been made to bring these ma- rauders to justice. Were a gunboat to he sent down to the Straits, as many wish, it would be dodged quite easily by the fast-sailine, light-draught, fish- ing, wrecking and smuggling schoon- ers of the gulf, with the intimate know- ledge possessed by their crews of the bays and coves of the coast.

Some day the pirates will encounter a well-armed captain and crew at a wreck, for steamship men know what they have to expect here. There will be a desperate fight, for the nirates are weil armed, and on some of their smug- fling expeditions they have already en- feaged the crews of the Government revenue cutters.—New York Sun.

Pretty Ornaments, a bowl, did you? Well, it will. Take a glass and fill it nearly full of salt; then water it every morning the same as you would a house-plant. After you water it the first day pour in a little of three or four prettily-colored inks. In about a week the salt will begia to grow and will run over the cup end

If you like green things, wet a sponge, sprin- kie it with Silurian grass seed and sus- pend it from the ceiling. In less than a week the sponge will look like a ball of green grass, Hang four or five of these green balls about a room and the effect is quite pretty. But those were old-time decorations, and I don’t know as people would care for them now.— Philadelphia Record.

The Marbivhead Dialect.

The Marblehead dialect, so-called, Was the old-time speech of Lincoln- Shire and Nottinghamshire in icng- land, somewhat enriched and modified, no doubt, by words and phrases from the Channel Islands. It was substan- tilly the language spoken by the ecrlier settlers of Boston and vicinity, though, because of our isolated pos- tion it survived here for a longer pes riod. It was peculiar, direct, hearty and expressive, abounding in queer turns and bright expressions. Instead of being caricatured it deserves to be enshrined in literature and some com- petent writcr ought to make a faith- ful study and portraiture of it and achieve what Bynner only half tried to do. But we rather suspect that when resolved into its elements it would be found to be nothing so dis- peculiar after all. William Black’s novels are full of genuine Marblehead expressions as everyone is aware who reads his books and knows Marble- head.—Marblehead Messenger.

New European Watering Place.

Colonei North the English nitrate king, is now negotiating with the King of Beigium for the purchase of the beach between Ostend and the parish of Mariakerke, situated a few miles to the south of the famous scashore resort. This territory belongs to the royal domains, and a bill permitting the transfer of that property has been introduced in the chambers. The pro- ject cf the English capitalist. who has offered seven and one-half million francs, $1,500,000, for the property, comprises a new sea bathing resort which shall surpass any of those now existing in Europe.
