We the friends of the Government fre jueutiy boasting of the flourishing state of the trexsary ; but if we are to jud se of the state of the pubiie huauces by the diiliculty which contractors find in getting their pay from the Government for work done, the funds in the Treasury must, indeed, be at « luw ebb.

How is it if Government is so flush of money that they cannot pay the contractur for buildin, the Sturgeon River Bridze? That work was done long since aceording to the specification, | sud why is the contracter not paid off? The | Georgetown Drill Shed has been finished for a| considerable time, and the contractor has not} yet received the price of the materials bought | fur it. Nor are these the only contracts which | are left in the same way. The Government | contract for all the public works they require, | and leave it to the poor contractor and his | workmen to provide the funds out of their ewn | pockets. If they would only pay up when the | work was completed we would not complain ; but this we can't get them to do; perhaps the Commissioner of Public works has some private | contracts of his owu which must be attended | te, or ae some of the more knowing ones say, | the Government want to close up their accounts | for this year before they pay off these balances, and they will then appear as a part of next | year’s debt, which the next Government will)

{Fon Tih EXAMENER. J Happening to be in King’s County on the day of the Council Election, I paid a Visit to the polling division at Montague Bridge. In

for the different candidates were very fair and impartial wea. But was there no partial men at that polling division? Let us see; there was an old lame manu present whom they call Squire S.C. What was his conduct during the day? Often when Mr. McDonald's agent was questionin a voter as tu his qualification, Syaire C. was heard to say, “Oh, she isa goud woat, Tam,” and often he limped up to the window and asked the voter to sell him his pro- perty for £100. I was surprised at the for- hearance of Mr. McDonald's agent. No doubt he knew the old fugie, aud the interest he had at stake better than I did, being # stranger in | that locality. I enquired who this notable character could possibly be; and, Sir, my curiosity was satisfied when J was informed that this same Squire C, was an Ecder ina Church in that loeality—that his son was Com-| missioner of Roads, and that the son was pre-| sent in the room the whole day while the votes were taken.

Is it not surprising how those petty office holders fear the loss of a vote? That they would have the impudence to present them- selves in front of the voters while they were | voting, is more than any man having the least | spark of fair play within him, would ever think of doing.

Hoping this public exposure of such das- taraly conduct will preveut a like occurrence in future, at election contests,
