Not Guiity.—The Coteau murder trial was couciaded at Montreai on LuesJay afternoon, acd the jury returned a verdict of not guilty against Caza. The announcement was re ceived with wild applause and cheering which the efforts of the officers of the court could net subdue for several minutes.

Races at Kiykora.—John O'’Ronoghan, Esq., desires to call attention to the grand day's trotting to be held on Kiakora Driving Park, on Oct. 9th. Gorse TO Work.—Ottawa advices state that the department of militia has been ad- vised by Col. Houghton, D. A. G., of Mou- treal distr ct, that the Dalians on the western sections of the Hereford railway are going to work, a settlement having been reached. The troops, however, will be kept under arms for a few days, as vo word has reached the de- partment of the condition of affairs on the eastern section.

Laxyox Wrns.—The much-talked-of fight between Joe Lannon, of Boston, (for- merly of Charlottetuwn) and Jim Glynn, of Brooklyn, N. ¥., came off at South Bos- ten, a shurt time ago, and resulted in a de- cisive victory for the former. Both men were in excellent condition, Lannon tip- ping the scales at 185 pounds. Lannon fought with a rush trom thestart, his op- ponent standing up wel!, and dving some clever work. Inthe fi:th round, Lannon struck Giynn « terrific left-hander in the face, which dazed him son.ewhat, and foi- Jowed up his advantage with a shot from his right on the neck, that sent the Brook- lyn representative to his corner, where he remained ina perfectly passive condition for about twenty seconds. When he r- gained his feet, Glynn asked, ‘* Was I knocked out ?” The referee rather thought he was, and decided that Lannon was the winner of the battle. The fight was for $750. Lannon is highly esteemed by the sporting fraternity of Boston, many of whom predict that he is the coming cham- pion. Joe himself is working hard for the coveted title. His greatest ambition is to win the championship, and exhibit the belt in his native city. If he does not succeed in doing s», it will not be because he did not try hard.

Sr. Pavt's Cxvrce was this morning the scene of a very interesting event,-—we refer to the marriage of John A. Longworth and Louise Caroline Palmer, son and daughter of the late Hon. John Longworth and Charles Palmer, Esq., Q. C., respectively. The ceremony was performed by the rec- tor, Rev. S. Weston-Jones, assisted by Rev. W. A. Frost. The bridesmsids were Miss Ethel! Palmer and Miss Isabel Long- worth ;the groomsmen Mr. B. F. Long- worth and Mr. William Palmer. Prof. Logan presided at the organ. After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Longworth left on & wedding trip to the United States. We wish them every success in life.
The nuptials of D. J. Macdonald, of the Post Ottice Department, and Sarah Isabella, daughter of the late Ronald Walker, were celebrated at Truro, N. S., on Tuesday morning, Rev. Father Cummaine officiat- ing. The bride was attended by her cousin, Miss Maggie Haley, of Antigonish, and Mr. P. A. Mclutyre, of this city, support- ed the groom. After congratulations and wedding breakfast, the happy couple leit by express for Halfax, and will arrive home on Saturday evening. The Times-Parnell Affair. Lonpox, Oct. 3, It is reported that the Times has} esolved, as it incurred great expense in bringing i to London to testify in the O'Donnell trial, and as it is ready to pur- sue the same course in connection with the trial of Parnell against it for libel, which | is to be tried in Scotland, it will not incur large expenses in appexring before the Parnell inquiry commission, but will simply supply evidence enough to justify the commission in summoning Parnell to the witness box to compel him to show his hand. The Times, it is said, will furnish the commission with notes of other wit- nesses whom the commission will be authorized to summon co testify.

The Parisian, of the Allan Line, due here yesterday, is aground on the soft mud in Lake St. Peter and is being lightened. Neither ship nor passengers are in danger.
Premier Mercier’s action in issuing a proclamation giving effect to the veto in District Magistrate’s Act, and his new proclamation constituting a new Magis- trate’s Court under the law of 1869, has caused surprise in legal cireles, as it was expected he would bend to the inevitable and abolish the court altogether. Con- siderable trouble is likely to be experienced.
On the Brink of Starvation. QUEBEC, Oct. 3.
News from Moisle, 202 miles east of the Saguenay, is of the must appailing charac- ter. The whole population of the district is on the brink of starvation. The fisher- ies this season have signally failed. The crops, of no great account at any time, have also turned out badly, and the few provisions in the place are high in price. The unfortunate inhabitants do not know which way tu turn for food and clothing. They are in a sad condition and wiater has commenced. Their case is one of the severest hardship.
The Andover Tragedy.
Anpover, N. B., Oct. 3.
This morning, the jury in the Tubique shooting case came into cvurt after being locked up all night, and reported that they had agreed ons verdict of manslaughter with # recommendation to mercy. The prisoners did not seem much affected when the verdict was announced. They were remanded to jail until this afternoon, when they were brought into court and sentenced to fifteen years each in the peni- tentiary.

A special cable says: ‘* Wiman’s sup- pressed letter is published in all the papers and creates amusement in Cinadian circles as letting the cat our of the commercial bag, showing that political union with the United States was the ultimate aim of Wiman’s movement.” The St. James’ Gazette says that Wiman is very kind to give us early information as regards the invitation for Canada to sink her interests in the States.
