Dear Editor:

I'd like to take this opportunity to applaud the efforts of the editor, staff, and volunteers. who produce the Panther Magazine. “As production manager of the yearbook staff, I understand how much time it takes to put together a two-page spread. improvement over last years and the content is superior. Our beloved GEM was a disappointment last year. Several articles printed in the 1989-1990 GEM were printed for shock purposes only. The Panther Magazine is a more mature attempt at publishing UPEI’s news and the opinions of students - there are some interesting reads this year. For example, the editorials are articulate and discuss student-related topics. I also like the Professor Focus. Being at a small university allows us to know our professors. We are unique in this respect and this section reflects the one-to-one relationship we are so lucky to have.

As no publication can be perfect-especially in its first efforts-I have some suggestions for improvement. The photos are great. But who is in them? The yearbook has adopted a new policy this year for photos: no name, no photo. include a short caption below any photos which would answer who?, what?, when?, and how?. I'd really like to know about the girl asleep on the bench in the September 13 issue. The "Concerned Student" in the same issue said the name was "pathetic". I think that’s a little strong. However, I don’t understand why a journalistic piece of work has been associated with "panther" - our sports mascot. I haven’t any suggestions for a new name just yet and I’m not complaining. Perhaps your staff could brainstorm a classy name for this class act!

Again, you, your staff, and the ever-sO-precious volunteers have my support. Good job!

Dear Editor:

As a fellow journalist on this campus, I am pleased to see the vast improvement in the "Gem" Panther Magazine. I now take the time to read the information and I love the new size. I feel it is imperative that a university produce journalism worthy of the education we are getting. I commend you all for the courage to change and go forward. Goodbye and good riddance to the old sex rag and hello to the new and improved Panther magazine!

Before you start wondering if we’re operating on a different calendar than 1990, this publication has been coming out Friday instead of Thursday for reasons beyond our control (i.e. at the printer’s— shop). Seeing that most people take off for the weekend Friday afternoon, we are trying to rectify this problem. Our apologies to anyone who’s been inconvenienced by the delay.
